Our StraightTalk “word of the week” is Linear TV i.e. traditional broadcast television, which functions on a set schedule and delivers content via satellite, or 'over the air.'. Our legacy news media has mostly failed to adapt to all things internet, even though the first news websites appeared circa 1995 - so they’ve had nearly 30 yrs to adapt. Instead they’ve been gorging on the cash cow of traditional TV advertising for decades, even though they knew it was dying. Now many are asking for even more taxpayer $$$ to prop them up. So should we feel sympathy for the struggles of TVNZ, and Newshub? Should even more taxpayer $$$ be dished out in order to prop them up? #StraightTalk #media #familyfirst #familyfirstnz

All streaming TV is becoming "mid-TV", categorised by high production values but unsophisticated plots. This is interesting in the context of the evolution of "taste". The blurring of high and low culture is a long-term trend. In mid-TV, we arguably see an end point, where the production values from high cultural TV are combined with the plotting of low cultural TV. But do TV execs underplay the role that "distinction" plays in people's lives? The concept of taste remains important for people distinguishing themselves from others, yet the markers of taste are being eroded. #semiotics #tv https://lnkd.in/eCVWzbK2

A free public media is a hallmark of our democracy. Suppression of the media (the enemy as described) will be very hard to do, except in one single case. That being National Public Radio and PBS TV. From the Internet: "The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is the steward of the U.S. federal government's investment in public broadcasting and the nation's largest single source of funding for public radio, television, and related services." I once had a Republican consultant describe NPR as "National Democratic Radio" and the funding for it has always been an issue for the Republican Party. Should the House stay Republican, this is the first area I'd watch for action to take place concerning media--removing federal funding for the two organizations above. Let's see what happens!
