Had another fun and enlightening conversation at the Comp Sci Book Club IRL book club with Mike R., Drew Knab, Kelly Corey, Jethro Masangya, Glenn Allen, Kyle Gilbert and Chris yesterday. Among other topics that came up we discussed telegraphs, telegraph relays and boolean algebra is they relate to logic gates. And converting between base 2, base 10, and base 8. Big thanks to Drew Knab for explaining to me that there are 8 bits in a byte because punch cards used to be tall enough for only 8 lines. Not 7. Not 9. So when computers were built with internal memory, of course convention dictated that we kept 8 bits per byte. Also, why are there 8 lines on a punch card? Because converting from base 2 to base 8 is pretty clean. Want to have a better understanding of computer memory, logic gates, hardware, or ANYTHING else related to software development?
