Encouraging people to use smaller modes of transport seems like such a basic idea and there have been many events and interventions to address this. The infrastructure remains the same (with the slow trickle of changes coming through on some streets). Nevertheless, the current city is still very attractive to privately owned single occupancy vehicles. This privilege of the few is at the expense of the voting majority who want more space on the road designated for safe cycle lanes. And this affect those people wanting to take micromobility who don’t feel safe. Look for yourself. Most drivers are alone in their private car. Can we increase the pain points of driving SOVs by reducing access to on-street parking as the first step? Can we build space for the majority who are willing and able to move through the city in smaller modes? Can we do this without removing access for those who physcally NEED cars to get around or to do their jobs? The answer is YES! But we need courageous leaders. We need to ‚Just say no‘ to single occupancy vehicles in the inner city. Leave room for emergency vehicles and those that vitally need motor vehicles for their work and those with mobility issues who really need them to get around. As it turns out, most people should not have to be reliant on motor vehicles to travel short distances. We need to build a system to remove the option of single occupancy vehicles MUCH less attractive to people who don't really NEED them. At a minimum, there should a time cost in the form of parking underground or in a location not next to your front door! Let’s remove the parked cars from the streets and park them underground as a start. Let's designate this newly freed space to safe and separated micromobility and green space.
