Popular Samsung and LG smart TVs can take multiple screenshots of what you're watching every second. Even when they're used as external displays for a laptop or gaming console😯 Manufacturers use them and audio recordings in their automatic content recognition systems to show people targeted ads. Researchers have found that Samsung TVs can take screenshots every 500 milliseconds, while LG TVs take screenshots every 10 milliseconds. When a user connects their laptop via HDMI to simply watch something on their laptop on a big screen, using the TV as a display, they're unaware that their actions are being recorded. Researcher Yash Vekariya and his colleagues connected Samsung and LG TVs to their server with network traffic analysis software. It acted as a proxy to see what visual screenshots or audio data the TVs were uploading. They noticed that smart TVs did not download anything when streaming Netflix or other third-party apps. However, smart TVs downloaded screenshots when showing broadcasts from a TV antenna or content from a device connected via HDMI. The problem is that these screenshots may contain sensitive information. Users can opt out of this tracking. But this process requires turning on or off between 6 and 11 different options in the TV settings. These are different for each model, so there is no universal solution.
