Blair Feltmate spoke to The Globe and Mail in this op-ed and emphasizes the urgent need for Canadian homeowners to protect their homes from flooding. With 1.5 million Canadians now ineligible for flood insurance, proactive measures are critical. "This need was on display with Toronto’s mid-July storm that flooded thousands of homes and displaced many of the 500,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area who rent basement apartments. Fueling the need for better preparedness, driven by climate change, future storms will be more severe." #FloodPreparedness #ClimateAdaptation Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gZhYuKfz

Escalating flood risks in the Eastern and Southern US affecting nearly 25% of the nation's population and GDP. Contributing factors include hurricanes, sea-level rise, and extreme rainfall, with inland areas now experiencing more frequent flooding. Underinsurance remains a significant concern, as less than 5% of residential properties nationwide have flood coverage, leaving local economies vulnerable. Ageing infrastructure and development in flood-prone zones further exacerbate the situation. There is a need for substantial investments in expanded insurance mandates, enhanced building codes, and increased federal or state aid to bolster resilience. https://lnkd.in/dMPfM7K8 Hydroinformatics Institute

Flood zones are being updated around Australia, & homeowners who once thought they were safe from river flooding aren't, & find themselves in an unwinnable double bind. As extreme rain events continue to break previous records, this will become a rinse & repeat tragedy, yet Australian governments & corporations are not recognising we are heading into a wartime-like #ClimateEmergency with no end in sight, & fiddling while the Planet burns. Far from the first home owners to become uninsurable in Australia, this is the first big group of 900 capital city dwellers ("people like us" as Australia was the already the most urbanised western nation by 1900); to find their house values tumbling, & insurance rates rocketing, with no limits on either. Also facing the likelihood that no one will be able to get a bank mortgage, to buy their homes either. As severe rain events & storms continue to get worse for the foreseeable future, these 900+ could find themselves like the people of Lismore. Living in unliveable houses, with no $ to move, & all or most of their household contents destroyed. We need to start thinking about how & where we establish long-term climate refugee camps and how to turn camps of traumatised survivors into villages of resilient communities. Australia has 10-11 million households. Within a relatively short period of time, up to 3 million households will be facing similar economic & environmental threats to their liveability. NB that's only to riverine floods. Add in coastal retreat, as sea levels rise, & extreme (event) sea levels rise even further... That's already happening in the single double digits per severe storm, but will also rise to the hundreds, thousands, & tens of thousands. Are you ready for such a massive dislocation to business as usual? Think the housing crisis bad now ? What about all the flow-on effects ? --- "Nine hundred property owners in one inner-city Melbourne suburb have just been told they live in a flood zone -- news that is expected to have big implications for property prices and insurance premiums. According to a new report from Climate Valuation, by 2030, over three million homes across Australia will have exposure to some level of riverine flood. Rhiana Whitson reports with Lucy Kent. https://lnkd.in/gWqtmHsg
