At the ISTSS Annual Meeting last week, CTRJJ faculty Dr. Keith Cruise, Dr. Julian Ford, and Dr. Carly Baetz, J.D., Ph.D. coauthored the symposium presentation, "Trauma Screening and Assessment with Adolescents Experiencing Systems Involvement: Challenges and Opportunities in Supporting Adolescents Identified as Polyvictims." Overall, symposium presentations underscored the importance of evidence-informed systematic assessment of the current and past trauma exposures of system-involved youth on an ongoing basis with the evidence from multiple informants included whenever possible. This is “just” good trauma-informed practice, but these research findings provide a crucial empirical grounding for practice guidelines that are specific, practical, and actionable. "As I was laying there, I was just thinking to myself, 'I can do it.'" Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez had a plan leading up to her April 24 due date. Coined "Operation Dissertation Before Baby," the plan included completing her dissertation for her doctorate at Rutgers Graduate School of Education, then having her baby in time to celebrate graduation and the summer with her family. In that order. But it didn't happen that way. On March 25, the morning of her dissertation, she went into labor. She wound up giving birth to Enzo in the car on the way to the hospital. After doctors checked them out, she took a nap, ate a meal and was ready to rock her defense presentation. Brevard-Rodriguez logged onto her laptop from her hospital bed and gave her presentation. And then when it was over, she took down her Rutgers background on Zoom, revealing the hospital. "Everyone was in complete shock," she says. 👋 Meet Dr. Katie Hunzinger, PhD., CEP, assistant professor of Exercise Science at Thomas Jefferson University. In the U.S., about 13-19% of all sports-related injuries are concussions. Concussions are a mild form of traumatic head injury (TBI), where a sudden impact causes the brain to bounce around in the skull. Generally, people recover from concussions without long-term effects, but what about repeated impacts on the head? 🏉 Dr. Hunzinger, a former rugby player and current referee, is working to answer that question drawing from her own experience to inform her work. It a study undertaken at the University of Cincinnati it was concluded that: The current data indicates an association of a decreased incidence of concussion among football players during the competitive seasons where vision training was performed as part of the preseason training. We suggest that better field awareness gained from vision training may assist in preparatory awareness to avoid concussion causing injuries. "I had the privilege of attending my first seminar conference on November 18, 2024, which marked a fantastic beginning to my professional development journey. The thought-provoking topic was, 'Diagnosis by Response To Intervention (RTI) in Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Multidisciplinary Perspective,' offered invaluable insights into the complexities of Specific Learning Disability (SLD). The seminar featured esteemed experts in the field, including Dr. Jayashree C Shanbal, Dr. Priya M. В., Dr. Rushi, Dr. Chandni Jain, and Dr. Pradeep Yuvaraj, who shared their expertise on evidence-based practices, response to intervention, and the role of multidisciplinary professionals in supporting children with SLD. The presentations covered a range of topics, including: - Overview of evidence-based practices in children with SLD from a global perspective - The role of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in Response to Intervention - Clinical psychologists' perspectives on Response to Intervention - Evidence-based practices in Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) - Challenges and considerations in implementing Response to Intervention for CAPD I felt honored to meet these distinguished experts and gain a deeper understanding of the topic. This seminar not only broadened my knowledge but also instilled in me a commitment to staying updated on the latest developments in the field."
