At 3 months old, my life was given a changed trajectory when I was adopted through a voluntary planned placement. My birth-mother, at 17, handpicked the Mueller Family for me, offering opportunities and a life she couldn't provide for me. This lived experience of pride in my adoption story ignited my passion for serving the community - specifically the community I represent through a long history of woven perspectives among each of us. I aspire for my career to focus on aiding adoptees and foster youth in Central Valley, providing vital resources to those systemically overlooked. Statistics show the challenges former foster youth face, including a shocking percentage relating to homelessness and substance abuse. My own biological family's lived experience with these statistics compels me to ignite change. In my biological family, I am breaking generational molds of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, youth arrest records, and raising the level of education we have received just by being a highschool graduate. This is not an achievement, but a devastating fact that shatters me and drives the mission in my heart. I aim to rewrite narratives and create positive impacts for the community. I look at the connotations the system correlates our lives to, and I say enough is enough. As I enter the world of nonprofit work, I carry with me the love and space of each child who did not get to choose their path, of each child who was told "those aren't your real parents", and each child who has been made to feel unseen. #Mixedfaces 🙄 #In 😶 #Mixedplaces 😵 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲: 😎 I lived with approximately 100 children as a child growing up in care across 10 foster homes and 2 children's homes. 👀 Yes, there was trauma, yes there was heartache and pain, but was it all doom and gloom? Is the system all bad and ugly with no good? I don't believe that's the case. I believe growing up around 100 different personalities, 100 different hearts and minds has actually given me a first-class degree in the university of people. 👨👩👧👧🎓 It's far too easy for us to focus on the doom and gloom of the care system—i.e., the trauma. But what about #fortitude? What about #pain2purpose? What about #resilience and #hope? 🌈 Growing up in the care system taught me invaluable life skills that have shaped who I am today: ❤️ 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒚: Living with so many different individuals, each with their own story, has equipped me with a deep sense of empathy. I learnt to understand and feel what others are going through, even if their experiences are vastly different from mine. 🔄 𝘼𝒅𝙖𝒑𝙩𝒂𝙗𝒊𝙡𝒊𝙩𝒚: Being moved between foster homes and children's homes meant constantly adjusting to new environments, rules, and people. This adaptability has become an incredible asset in both my personal and professional life. 💪 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆:The challenges I faced instilled in me a level of resilience that's hard to come by. Every hardship became a lesson, every setback a stepping stone towards becoming stronger and more determined. 🌍 𝑫𝙞𝒗𝙚𝒓𝙨𝒊𝙩𝒚 𝑨𝙥𝒑𝙧𝒆𝙘𝒊𝙖𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣:Growing up with children from various backgrounds and cultures has created a deep appreciation for diversity. It has broadened my worldview and enriched my understanding of different perspectives. This was further enhanced by being seen as mixed race, making it easier for me to adapt to multiple cultures effortlessly. 🎭 𝑪𝙤𝒅𝙚-𝙎𝒘𝙞𝒕𝙘𝒉𝙞𝒏𝙜 𝙖𝒏𝙙 𝙎𝒐𝙘𝒊𝙖𝒍 𝑨𝙙𝒂𝙥𝒕𝙖𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣: Similar to the concept of "code-switching," I developed the ability to change my voice, tone, and demeanour to fit various social contexts. Living in diverse environments taught me how to be a social chameleon, seamlessly blending into different social situations and understanding the nuances of human interaction. 🤝 𝙇𝒆𝙖𝒅𝙚𝒓𝙨𝒉𝙞𝒑 & 𝑪𝙤𝒍𝙡𝒂𝙗𝒐𝙧𝒂𝙩𝒊𝙤𝒏: Navigating through the dynamics of living with numerous children required leadership and collaboration. These experiences have honed my ability to lead, work in teams, and build strong, supportive relationships. Yes, the care system has flaws, but it's also a space for remarkable growth and transformation. In my opinion, if a child in care has chosen to trust you & wants to spend time with you, this should be seen as a privilege. Amongst all the chaos in their life, all the people coming & going, they see you as someone safe, someone who cares & can provide them with stability. Don’t start voicing that they’re “clingy” or overly attached. & don’t as a manager, tell the staff member to stay away from the child because they’re “too attached” (yes this happened to me). Yes encourage children to build relationships with multiple staff members but, essentially this can’t be forced. Let children move at their pace & what’s comfortable for them. & also remember, if a child is “too attached” to you in a children’s home, it’s a privilege & foundation where the child can feel safe enough to start to grow & thrive in other areas of their life (including building relationships with others) because their home life is starting to feel more settled & secure.

Programs that prioritize skill-building, mental health support, and meaningful opportunities are not just changing lives—they're reshaping how we define justice and redemption. We think this is unhelpful and adds to the low retention rate of carers in the first year and placement breakdowns. It is not about being “put off”, it is about being prepared and knowing what to expect, people who want to care for children are usually far more resilient than the recruiters think and will not be put off, they want to do the job. #fostercareawareness #fosterWiki #facts #fostercare #fosteringjourney

There shouldn’t be competition in this field, there should be a collaborative effort to transform the system to allow children to flourish whilst they go through a huge stage in their life full of uncertainty. If you're working in the care sector, empathy is key. It's concerning to see how much of this trait is lacking in the field. Foster carers, you should never see looking after children as a job, I went to homes where they treated it like that. If you can’t give a love like a parent, I feel it’s not right for you. Looked after children are not cases, they are children. If you don't see them that way, this field may not be for you. Let's focus on the empathetic and loving professionals who go above and beyond. There shouldn't be competition between agencies or residentials with who can get the better Ofsted scores. If something is working well, it should be shared. Our focus should always be on the children. That's why I'm here on LinkedIn, connecting with those who truly care. Together, we can bring about positive change.
