There is so much to learn in this new report from the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, but the central takeaway for me is this: People (including those with IDD) are whole. It is our systems that are fragmented, and that is harming folks with IDD. Read more about how a more holistic approach to improving behavior supports would integrate a focus on physical health, mental health, and other factors. https://lnkd.in/eZ3U2P5k

While individuals with FASD may experience several challenges, there are several protective factors that can result in positive outcomes and enable potential achievement. These factors will develop coping strategies and provide support. These include: ➡️ Stable and nurturing home ➡️ Consistent home environment ➡️ Positive home life, particularly between the ages of 8-12 ➡️ Basic needs met ➡️ No experience with violence or trauma ➡️ Received developmental disabilities services ➡️ Diagnosed before 6 years of age Learn more about protective factors for positive outcomes by taking our Foundations in FASD course: https://ow.ly/ZoER50SSi29

Prepare in advance for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) awareness month by having a variety of resources that you can use to spread the word about this hidden disability that affects 1 in 20 children. Awareness leads to better outcomes for those who need our support. Awareness fuels prevention. Awareness leads to empathy. Awareness leads to funding. An effective tool for teaching children about neurodiversity is children’s books. Please consider adding this resource to your catalog. After sharing the story, use the discussion questions in the back to build on what was read. I’d love to hear about what children have to say about Charlie and if it helps them understand other children with invisible disabilities. Go to dynamic-resources.org and type “invincible” in the search to buy your copy it is only 9.95 plus shipping Please share or repost this to help others learn about this resource #slp #teachers #parenting #neurodiversity #FASD #invinciblenotinvisible

Today is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) The global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. This is a day to create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, is also significant. It was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. The theme for this year is End the Stereotypes. Stereotypes can stop people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities from being treated like other people. Every person is different and unique and we should all remember that having Down syndrome or an intellectual disability is just one part of who a person is. #WorldDownSyndromeDay #EndTheStereotypes #personalcare #ndispersonalcare #personalcareassistance #complexcare #ndiscomplexcare #planmanagement #ndisplanmanagement #communityaccess #ndiscommunityaccess #alliedhealth #ndisalliedhealth #ndisaccommodation #sil #helpathandsupport
