Yesterday, I had the incredible privilege of attending a Juneteenth event featuring the inspiring Dr. Opal Lee, often referred to as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth." Her presence and words were both powerful and humbling, reminding us of the significance of Juneteenth. Dr. Lee shared two quotes that resonated deeply with me: "Make yourself a committee of one to change someone’s mind" and "Remember, July 4th freed the land, Juneteenth freed the people." These sentiments encapsulate the essence of Juneteenth and offer profound lessons for both personal and professional growth. Reflecting on "Make yourself a committee of one to change someone’s mind," I am reminded of the power of individual action in driving change. In our work, we often encounter moments where we can influence perspectives and promote inclusivity. By committing to educate, empathize, and advocate for equity, each of us can play a pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive and understanding workplace. The statement "July 4th freed the land, Juneteenth freed the people" underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating freedom and justice for all. As leaders, it's crucial to ensure that our teams not only feel valued but also empowered. This means actively creating spaces where every voice is heard, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive. Incorporating these principles into our work and leadership development involves: 1. Active Listening and Empathy: Taking the time to understand the experiences and challenges of others, and using that understanding to inform our actions. 2. Educational Initiatives: Promoting continuous learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organizations. 3. Advocacy, Allyship, and being a co-conspirator: Standing up for what is right, even when it's difficult, and supporting those who face injustice. Let’s honor Juneteenth by making a personal commitment to drive positive change, one conversation, and one action at a time. #Juneteenth #Leadership #Inclusion #OpalLee #Diversity #Equity #ChangeMakers #USCG #DHS #TechPride #LeadershipDevelopment

Connecting across disconnections A few weeks ago, we shared insights into the inaugural Relationships Across Differences (RADs) Roundtable, held by The Wharton School, Harvard Business School and INSEAD. In this INSEAD Knowledge piece, we go into more detail. We #spotlight the work of several speakers, who are critically rethinking what concepts such as #diversity, #inclusion, #authenticity and #allyship, mean, and how these concepts are used beyond academic roundtables. We discuss the new #perspectives they yield on the current DEI landscape. For example, amid #backlash against DEI initiatives, many speakers highlighted how the struggle for more #equal and #inclusive #businesses and #societies, continues through other initiatives, such as those promoting authenticity and allyship. So feel free to read, share, and create further #connections! Kaisa Snellman Marie Drunat Kamil Stroński Daisy Pollenne Monique van Donzel Nick Measures Rachel Eva Lim Stephanie Creary Robin J. DEI is a bone of contention. Some support, advocate, and promote it, while others remain skeptical. I strongly believe that if DEI programs are designed and delivered properly, they bring tremendous results for all inhabitants of the culture and the greater good. Our DEI programs are designed based on adult learning principles and create a safe atmosphere for participants to reflect, share, ask, and engage in constructive dialogues. We know that one DEI session can't result in an equitable and inclusive culture. But, at least it lays a solid foundation on which to build a truly diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible culture... That said, I created a short clip to explain why only a few organizations and teams have achieved inclusion. I shared one of the challenges of creating an inclusive and equitable culture: Micro-Aggressions. I also offered one of the strategies to use to combat micro-inequities: Receiving, and providing feedback. Watch it and let me know your thoughts... https://lnkd.in/eqJ8wNMU

Reaching success has been a journey full of challenges, resilience, and growth. My story began in the cotton fields of West Texas, and through hard work and determination, I now have the privilege of being a panelist in New York City, speaking to leaders from across the US. This moment feels surreal, yet I know my mother is watching over me every step of the way, guiding me to where I am today. What am I talking about, I am excited to announce that I’ll be a panelist at the 7th Annual Hispanic Leadership Summit (HLS), hosted by the We Are All Human Foundation on December 10 at the IBM Headquarters in NYC. This is more than just a panelist discussion – it’s an opportunity to amplify the voices of #Latino talent, address the barriers they face, and work towards creating workplaces that celebrate and empower #diversity. During the summit, I’ll be sharing recruitment strategies designed to elevate #Latino professionals and foster a culture of inclusion within Corporate America. Our session will cover vital topics, including: • Best Practices for Preparing Latino Talent: Discussing ways to equip Latino professionals with the tools they need to succeed and thrive. • Challenges in Attracting, Developing, and Retaining Latino Employees: Identifying the real issues companies face and how we can address them effectively. • Spotlighting Success Stories: Highlighting organizations that have successfully built robust pipelines of Latino talent and cultivated inclusive environments. • Effective #Recruitment and #Retention Strategies: Revealing what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to aligning talent acquisition with broader organizational goals. This summit is a testament to the power of #unity and collaboration in building a future where #Latino voices are represented at every level of Corporate America. I’m eager to join forces with other industry leaders to shape the next chapter of #Latino #talent, helping #break #barriers and open doors for a more inclusive tomorrow. Let’s set the stage for more inclusive recruitment practices and meaningful change! #HLS2024 #WeAreAllHuman #LatinoLeadership #InclusiveRecruitment #DiversityandInclusion We Are All Human Foundation Dallas HR Fort Worth HR Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Grand Prairie Hispanic Chamber of Commerce "Your small business resource partner" SHRM Hispanic Executive Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) University of North Texas Southern Methodist University The University of Texas at Dallas The University of Texas at Arlington

A recent BYP Network newsletter has sparked some important reflections on the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in our workplaces and institutions. It's concerning to see some organisations scaling back or eliminating their DEI efforts. This trend is more than just a localised issue – it has the potential to impact progress on a much broader scale, echoing Dr. King's timeless wisdom about the interconnected-ness of justice. As leaders, we have a responsibility to not only maintain but strengthen our commitment to fostering inclusive environments where all talent can thrive. It's not just ethically right—it's essential for innovation, growth, and long-term success in our increasingly diverse world. I'm curious: How is your organisation prioritising DEI? What challenges are you facing, and what successes have you seen? In my work with clients, I've found that building empathy is key to creating truly inclusive workplaces. It's about understanding the unique experiences and challenges faced by underrepresented professionals. This understanding is crucial for attracting, retaining, and developing diverse talent effectively. Let's continue to champion DEI efforts, even—especially—when they face opposition. The future of our workplaces and our society depends on it. #DiversityAndInclusion #LeadershipDevelopment #WorkplaceCulture #EmpathyInAction #BlackHistoryMonth

I am starting this week by sharing some food for thought. As a DEI practitioner, I like to reflect on a few key principles: D - Diversity must be Deliberate. It’s not just about who you’re hiring or promoting—it’s also about who you’re interviewing and why. Whose ideas are being heard and considered, and whose are not? Who is being recognized for their contributions, and who isn’t? Who feels empowered to share feedback, and who doesn’t? Who is reprimanded, and who isn't? Be deliberate in your approach to fostering diversity. E - Equity cannot exist without Education. Equity begins with self-reflection and a commitment to growth. Regardless of your degree or title, there is always more to learn. Start by recognizing the gaps in your knowledge, then take active steps to understand the experiences and perspectives of the people you lead and work with. By investing in continuous learning, you’ll foster a stronger, more supportive community. I - Inclusion drives Innovation. When everyone feels heard, valued, and respected, they’re more likely to bring their best ideas forward. In a truly inclusive environment, innovation thrives—something every organization should aim to achieve. #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #DEI #Leadership #Innovation #WorkplaceCulture #IntentionalLeadership #CommunityBuilding #ContinuousLearning #Leadership
