Transportation accounts for 29% of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Most American investments and policies in transportation focus on transitioning the existing vehicle fleet, especially passenger cars, from the internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric. An alternative approach would be to encourage a modal shift from passenger cars altogether towards low-carbon micromobility modes - everything from bikes to a wide variety of battery-boosted small devices like e-bikes and e-scooters. Sweden has announced plans to construct the world’s first permanent electrified road by 2025. This project aims to change the way electric vehicles (EVs) are powered, offering them the ability to charge while in motion. 𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 - Catenary Systems: Similar to how modern trams are powered, overhead lines will provide power directly to the vehicles moving beneath them. - Ground-based Power: This method involves embedding electric rails in the road surface that transfer power directly through contact. - Inductive Charging: The most futuristic of the three, this involves charging vehicles wirelessly through coils embedded in the road, offering a seamless transfer of energy without direct contact. The primary aim of this initiative is to decarbonize transportation - a major contributor to global emissions. 𝐁𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐨, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨: - Extend Vehicle Range: Vehicles can travel longer distances without the need for large onboard batteries. - Reduce Stop Times: Eliminates the need for frequent stops at charging stations, making electric vehicles more practical for long-distance travel. - Support Fossil Fuel-Free Mobility: Aligns with global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change. If successful, Sweden’s electrified road could serve as a model for other nations, accelerating the shift to sustainable mobility worldwide. How do you see electrified roads changing the landscape of global transportation? Could this be the key to achieving widespread adoption of electric vehicles? #innovation #technology #future #management #startups
