Culminating an up-and-down, two-year journey, Malika Jeffries-EL, professor of chemistry and senior associate dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, along with a team of BU researchers, has been awarded a five-year, $3 million Research Traineeship grant from the National Science Foundation to help PhD students collaborate across disciplines to develop new ideas to convert and store sustainable energy sources. The award will create a new training program that unifies resources in engineering, chemistry, computer science, and data sciences to provide participating students with a broad exposure to energy-related issues. “We are at a point where we need to be intentional with problems we are tackling,” Jeffries-EL says. “It’s all interconnected. These are complicated problems, and it requires an interdisciplinary approach and interdisciplinary science.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ere29vTh

In summer 2022, Saad Lahrichi, a Duke Kunshan University student, found himself in a tough spot—stuck in Durham due to COVID-19 with limited job prospects because of visa restrictions. Enter Data+. Under the guidance of Duke ECE’s Kyle Bradbury, Saad curated satellite image datasets for AI to tackle climate challenges. The result? Strong mentorship, a deeper love for research and his name as second author on a published article. For over a decade, Duke University's Data+ program has been a cornerstone of experiential learning, empowering students to tackle real-world challenges through data-driven, interdisciplinary projects. I'm looking for 1 or 2 students interested in doing their master's theses on - Data analysis on the interactions between Automated Vehicles and human road users in urban traffic. Trajectory data has been well processed and handy to use. - Safety evaluation of multi-vehicle interactions on highways. The evaluation will be based on a framework we are publishing. This project requires experience with pytorch.
