The MIT Mobility Initiative (MMI) is delighted to announce the fifteenth and final episode of the MIT Mobility Forum Fall 2024 hosted by Prof. Jinhua Zhao. Forum Title: The Dilemma of Transport Planning and a Possible Alternative Urban Vision Speaker: Kay Axhausen, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, ETH Zürich What is next when business as usual (BAU) doesn’t work anymore? The talk will reflect about the absence of a positive vision in transport policy, which can achieve the climate goals. Central is the idea of an “e-bikecity” and its possible contribution. The talk will also raise the question, if we need clear numerical targets to manage the current constraints. Fridays 12:00-13:00 ET, Aug 30 - Dec 13, 2024 The MIT Mobility Forum is open to the public. Please register here - https://lnkd.in/gGtR3gG7

RWTH’s new Profile Area, Built and Lived Environment, was inaugurated at RWTH 👍 In the future, we want to shape our living environment so it is more sustainable, more climate-friendly, conserves more resources, and is thus viable in the long term. So what could this look like? As an example, construction is considered a big driver of climate change. At the same time, climate change constitutes a major challenge for the built environment. Climate protection and climate adaptation are thus becoming key tasks of the construction industry. This is where the research of the Profile Area Built and Lived Environment (BLE) at RWTH comes in, which examines how the interplay of innovative building, human use, and societal embedding may result in increased environmental sustainability of construction. Today, Sofia Eckersten is defending her doctoral thesis, exploring integrating environmental aspects and sustainability perspectives in strategic #transportplanning. Studying the complex interaction between transport and land use planning can identify different strategies and measures to promote sustainable #transportsystems in urban areas. "My results show challenges related to transport and land use planning and the actors' varying commitment to addressing environmental and sustainability issues in Trafikverket's strategic Choice of Measures (SCM). There is a need for a system perspective in SCM to understand connections and promote holistic solutions. The thesis proposes how stakeholder collaboration and integration of environmental and sustainability perspectives in strategic transport planning can be improved, which can help to identify measures to promote the transition to a sustainable society," says Sofia Eckersten, a doctoral student at the Department of Sustainability, Evaluation, and Governance. The supervisors are Professor Berit Balfors and Associate Professor Ulrika Gunnarsson Östling at the Department of Sustainability, Evaluation, and Governance. Opponent: Professor Isabel Loupa-Ramos, Instituto Superior Técnico and University of Lisbon. DTU - Technical University of Denmark and Aalborg University research should take feedback and collaborate with the industry as they advance together towards a greener future. That's exactly what happened at the workshop on ‘Zero Emission Port Stay', where the innovative findings were discussed with key players in the industry, such as A.P. Moller - Maersk, DFDS, MAN Energy Solutions, and Blue World Technologies, Danske Maritime (Danish Maritime) and vital Denmark’s port managers and port management companies among many others. The "Zero Emission Port Stay" workshop convened a diverse group of stakeholders to address the imperative of reducing emissions during port stays. Participants engaged in comprehensive discussions spanning environmental considerations, regulatory landscapes, and the intricate technical challenges inherent in realizing emission-free port operations. Deliberations included an in-depth exploration of alternative technologies, with particular emphasis on their viability for mitigating emissions. The workshop was designed to yield valuable insights intended to inform the development of a formalized strategy and solution framework. Maritime DTU, Green Ship of the Future and Maritime Research Alliance aim for this to be the first of many events that will shape a dynamic balance between industry needs and academia that hones and continuously drives the technology of today to a more sustainable industry for tomorrow.

Talk: From Relative to Absolute in 20 min A deep-dive into the notion of Absolute Environmental Sustainability by Michael Hauschild, professor and Centre lead at Centre for Absolute Sustainability. The talk will be high-quality live-streamed directly from the DTU Library - Technical Information Center of Denmark in collaboration with DTU Medialab. The talk will bring us on a tour into the #sustainability paradigm. What does it take for new technologies not to compromise earths #planetaryboundaries. Is at all feasible to talk about sustainability when bringing new technologies to life? “From Less-Bad to Good Enough" should be the mantra, but what is Good Enough? A target-driven approach will reveal the extent of #system and #societalchange that is needed and offer a guiding star for large corporations, municipalities and even national policy making. The talk will be moderated by Krestine Mougaard, Senior Consultant and Programme Manager at the Centre for Absolute Sustainability Find link in the comment to sign-up. We hope to see many of you there. DTU - Technical University of Denmark DTU Sustain DTU Construct
