Monolithic Insulating concrete Structures: A Sustainable Breakthrough In the picturesque village of Fläsch, Switzerland, a remarkable example of sustainable architecture stands tall. Constructed using monolithic Insulating concrete, a high-performance insulating concrete, this single-family home epitomizes efficiency and comfort. Homeowners attest to the exceptional indoor climate fostered by these innovative building materials. Thermal imaging reveals an impressive feat of insulation. Even with a 50% reduction in Insulating concrete thickness, there is a negligible temperature difference—less than 1 degree Celsius—between the outer walls and ceiling structure on the northwest-facing façade. The enhanced contrast in the second image, taken from the northeast perspective, vividly illustrates this achievement. Despite an external temperature of 1 degree Celsius, the interior maintains a cozy 23 degrees Celsius, showcasing the insulation's effectiveness within a 40 cm thickness of Insulating concrete. The color scale confirms that no energy escapes outward, achieved entirely without conventional insulation methods. This exemplifies how reimagining concrete can significantly contribute to sustainability goals. Such projects serve as beacons of innovation and promise, demonstrating the potential for widespread adoption. They can be highly optimized, using smaller sections of premium lumber where it is of most value and less expensive lumber elsewhere. However, this can lead to serious problems when trusses are improperly specified, especially in areas subjected to high snow loads.
