Is the goal to "grab business", "shake up financial advising", or maybe just to build a new, modern approach to financial advice - one that is fair, transparent, and accessible to all? I recently spoke with a reporter at Barron's regarding financial advisor fee models. You can read the article here (https://lnkd.in/enfJWeGM), but I'll share a few comments below. When I do interviews or podcasts, people often ask me what it's like to try and disrupt an industry. Funny thing is that my goal is not to disrupt but to create, and disruption happens to be the byproduct of creation. As a co-founder of Facet, my goal has always been to create (to build) a new type of tech-centric, financial planning firm - one that works for families like mine. The premise is simple - provide financial planning for every facet of life, do what is right for your members every step of the way, help them lead better lives, and charge a fair fee for the work. The truth is that it's hard to bring simple ideas to life ... really hard. But it's worth it. If you know me, you know that I believe charging based upon how much someone invests (aka the AUM fee) is a broken model. Full disclosure, I'm a "reformed" AUM charging advisor myself. I even sold commissionable products. Yikes! But this helped me see what was broken about the model - misaligned incentives, no direct link between value and cost, and no standard for what financial planning is or should be. So when I think about the business we want to build and the millions of people we want to help, I don't ask "how can I disrupt this industry". Rather, I ask questions like "what should financial planning really look like?", "what to people truly need from their money to lead better lives", "how do we make this more accessible and affordable to all people"? Not surprisingly, a lot of "traditional" financial advisors will tell me that the flat fee model will never work. Well, in the words of Upton Sinclair, “It is difficult to get a [person] to understand something, when [their] salary depends on his not understanding it.” Incentive models matter way more than most people know. I've always said, "tell me how someone is paid, and I'll tell you what kind of advice they will give you." The AUM fee model is broken. That doesn't mean every advisor that uses it is bad, but it's an incentive model that works for the advisors more than the clients. Embrace a new way forward or fight it. The choice is yours. At the end of the day, everyday people will ultimately decide what is best for them. We're just here to give people the freedom of choice.
