What’s the Risk if We Push? Tougher punishments including jail terms and fines of up to BD100,000 have been proposed to combat illegal fishing and exploitation of sea and marine resources. MPs have proposed amendments to the 2002 Fishing Organisation, Catching and Protection Law, which could lead to violators punished with up to a year in jail, fine of BD1,000 to BD10,000, or both for breaching Article 18. Breaching Articles 21d and 22 could lead to violators jailed for three months or up to a year, or fined between BD1,000 and BD5,000, or both. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dY-YtHKG

It contains two articles for people interested in public security and law enforcement in Brazil: The Military Police put an end to the activities of a gang specializing in cable theft in Imbariê, Rio de Janeiro. Eight suspects were arrested, they were engaged in the attempted theft of underground cables. Tools used in the crime were also seized: a ton of cables already stolen, a truck for transporting the illicit material, as well as equipment such as a pickaxe, shovel, ladder, and saw arches. https://lnkd.in/daPc8vja For every ten cigarettes consumed in São Paulo, four are illegal and the main reason for the increase in the underground market is the price, which is up to 59% lower. Across the nation, we have seen recent examples of high profile crimes that have involved knives. As reported in the media, both the New South Wales and Western Australian governments are set to introduce new "wanding" legislation allowing police to search for knives without a warrant in certain public spaces. These newly proposed laws are part of a suite of reforms to target possession of knives, particularly among young people, reduce knife crime and boost community safety. Both sets of legislation are modelled on police search powers utilised in Queensland, and based on Jack's Law, where more than 500 weapons have reportedly been taken off the streets since the reforms were introduced in March 2023. Will the rest of the states such as Victoria and South Australia follow suit? Only time will tell. According to ABC News last month, at this stage, there has been no significant public discussion in Victoria or South Australia about changing its knife laws. In those states, however, police can carry out unplanned searches without a warrant in designated areas. Illegal Dumping/Communications Hill North Description: There’s been another ILLEGAL DUMP as reported by HPD Patrol Offices at 10:40 AM this morning (Thursday September 5, 2024) while on community patrol of Communications Hill North. This incident has been reported and filed with the City of San Jose and San Jose 311 Departments. As of this writing, there has not been a clean-up date or timeline indicated as to when the city will dispatch clean-up crews to clear the dump of several bags of trash which are located on the NORTHBOUND side of Communications Hill North just after the turn-around. HPD Patrol Officers also noted that at the fence area at the turn-around, there is a large accumulation of trash bags and that it may be possible that the suspect/s may have taken some of those trash bags from the fenced area and dumped them on the street (Communications Hill North) Both myself and our hospitality and homeowner protection “teams” will continue to be advocates for the community and the personal safety of all residents of this community as well as communities all over the South Bay. Do you know about the 12 nautical mile territorial sovereignty line? The coastal State exercises sovereignty over its territorial sea, the airspace above it, and the seabed and subsoil beneath it. Crimes committed within these waters are not considered piracy and are considered crimes governed by the State whose waters they belong to. So theft is not considered piracy and local law enforcement has jurisdiction over crimes committed in these waters.
