In Honor of♻ #GlobalRecyclingDay March 18, 2024, #Recyclingawareness and #RecyclingHeroes We're sharing a shoutout to one of our local partners here in #EriePA, International Recycling Group and newBin. You can checkout their updates on the project at their website https://lnkd.in/eW7bjtYT , but here is a playback to their introduction during our #PlastekAcademy #Webinar : Emergence of the Hyper-Scale #Plastics Recovery Facility. https://lnkd.in/ebHprM9a #Plastek Academy Webinar (aired June 16, 2022) Title: Plastek Academy: Emergence of the Hyper-Scale Plastics Recovery Facility, Presented by International Recycling Group Intro: With a feeding frenzy occurring for all post-consumer resins by CPGs—including #PET, #HDPE and #PP—prices are at historically high levels. A mismatch between materials needed to satisfy recycled content mandates—governmental and consumer—and supply, can only be bridged by significant investment in large-scale mechanical recycling facilities to drive down the cost of #recycling. IRG was founded to develop the country’s first hyper-scale (100,000+ tons p.a.) sorting, washing and pelletizing plant in Erie, PA. We will go into details about the plant, throughputs, operations and anticipated finished products. Presentation Summary: - What has suppressed participation in recycling, and the amount of recyclable material reaching recyclers? - Why will IRG be a benefit to households, haulers, and the supply of all recyclable materials? - Technical limitations of #PCR & impact on product attributes. - How today's economics justify investment in large-scale, 100% automated sorting facilities to satisfy the need for PCR. - Review of IRG's plant under development in Erie, PA. Guest Speakers: Mitch Hecht Founder & Chairman

🎤 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗮𝘀 𝗡𝗶𝗲𝘂𝘄𝗲𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 '𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿: 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁' Recently, our CTO, Bas Nieuwenhuis, was one of the guest speakers at the sold-out Plastics Seminar organized by Polymer Science Park in the Makersfabriek Zwolle. Bas shared his insights on producing with regrind and how innovative dosing technologies can help us use recycled materials. He delved into the use of regrinds, biobased materials, and recyclate. Processing post-consumer recyclate presents significant challenges, such as inconsistent contamination and complex flow properties. Bas demonstrated how our advanced dosing technologies can overcome these obstacles and contribute to a more sustainable plastics industry. We are proud of Bas's contribution to the seminar and his dedication to closing the plastics loop. #circulareconomy #regrind #sustainability #seminar

🍶 ♻ Can you imagine new processes to #recycle plastics such as PET trays and multilayer #packaging? Together with experts from 12 other European partners, we have achieved it in the Enzycle project, coordinated by ITENE and funded by BBI JU and #Horizon2020 and whose last General Meeting took place this 📅 28th of May in our facilities. In the final event, the partners have explained that, by developing innovative solutions that use microbial enzymes to valorise and upgrade these fractions, transforming them into valuable resources, we have faced the important challenge of non-recyclable #plastic fractions. ⚗ First, enzymes with the potential to break down the plastics into their original components (monomers) were obtained, after which a further processing step was developed to recover and purify the necessary monomers before transforming them into new plastics. ➡ Finally, they were transformed into new materials, such as PET and polyurethane foam, products that can be used in various sectors, such as #packaging, #transport, construction and #textiles. 👉 Want to know more? Our MÖBIUS model shows the interconnections and implications of different scenarios for achieving EU legislative targets and beyond 🚮 ♻ 📊 👉 Building on years analysing how materials flow through the system, the platform is able to work with multiple scenarios and assess possible outcomes. Called Möbius, it has been designed to bring greater understanding of the material flows and infrastructure required to develop the circular economy for flexible plastics. ___ CEFLEX uses Möbius to support our collection , sorting and recycling strategy recommendations among other pieces of work. By exploring a number of different combinations of technologies and capacity choices required we can assess and inform industry of the implications of delivering on recycled content and recycling targets in PPWR legislation. It provides a solid basis for engaging the wider value-chain, other material sectors and decision-makers with data-supported insights within feasible established boundaries. Join CEFLEX stakeholders in getting privileged insights at our General Meetings and work package sessions. #FlexiblePackaging #Packaging #MissionCircular #PPWR

The #PlastChem project team is very grateful for the media coverage since the launch of our PlastChem report! Of particular focus of this coverage was the more than 16,000+ chemicals in plastic products, of which at least 4,200 plastic chemicals (or 26%) are of concern because of their high hazards to human health and the environment. One lesser discussed aspect that we are particularly proud of is that this dataset of 16000+ plastic chemicals is openly available to all, along with all the information we had about their hazards, to make our key findings. #datatransparency This dataset is freely available, following #FAIR principles, for all to download on our webpage and Zenodo page. It was built by combining several previous efforts to make such lists, including those which the authors contributed to, along with their students, colleagues and research network. We share this data openly to encourage more research and transparency in relation to these plastic chemicals. Through encouraging such transparency, we hope it will encourage an international shift towards incentivizing the simplification of plastics towards safety and sustainability.
