One of my (many) favorite things about train travel in Japan, is the station melodies. Not only is it fantastic sonic branding for the train company brand (JR East) it’s also great for accessibility. Japan's railways are mostly private companies, so they compete for commuters. Believe it or not, people have brand loyalty to specific lines, specific trains or even commuter card brands. BONUS - there is a link to many MP3's of the JR East station melodies in the comments. #sonicbranding #audiobranding #traintravel
My fascination with Japan just reached a new high 🇯🇵🚆 In most train stations in Europe we are used to hearing basic dings and dongs. But in Japan metro riders are treated with fully composed 7-second jingles that are uniquely written for each station. Imagine if such a creative and innovative idea was applied here💡 (Are you watching DSB and The Copenhagen Metro and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail?) Meet Minoru Mukaiya – the man behind these melodies at over 110 stations in Tokyo. For him, there's no greater joy than adding a touch of music to the daily commute of millions across Japan ♬ #sonicbranding #japan #publictransport #unmute

#Singapore 🇸🇬: If one had had any doubts about the power of the creative economy, just take a look at #TaylorSwift’s much discussed ongoing series of 6 concerts in Singapore—her only stop in Southeast Asia on her blockbuster #TheErasTour. According to Benicia Tan in The Business Times: “Taylor Swift’s six concerts in March could boost Singapore’s economy by up to S$500 (US$370 million) in tourism receipts, according to economists’ estimates. “Assuming that the majority of concertgoers are flying in from other parts of Asia, the tourism receipts related to Taylor Swift’s tour can come in at S$350 million to S$500 million,” said Erica Tay, director of macroeconomic research at Maybank. “DBS Bank economist Han Teng Chua, CFA had a similar estimate of S$300 million to S$400 million in revenue, or an estimated 0.2 per cent of Singapore’s first-quarter gross domestic product. …” And in a bit of karma… Two days before flying back to Singapore to speak at the East-West Biopharma Summit, I received a message from a friend who I had first met via my Milken Institute Asia Summit panel on Asian / AAPI storytelling from LA to Korea to India to Singapore & Malaysia. Since I’d be landing in time, would I be interested in going to see Taylor Swift a few hours after my flight landed. The answer in the post / video below. https://lnkd.in/dMPhHVrU With a shout-out to Team #AmberLounge ✊ at National Stadium. Cheers. #USA #Asia #SoutheastAsia #creativeeconomy #TaylorSwiftErasTour #TaylorSwiftinSG #dazzling #ShakeItOff #softpower #culturaldiplomacy

Samurai of Culture initially aired on the History Channel, Amazon Prime, and Hulu in Japan, and is now being introduced to a global audience. The documentary explores the samurai culture that lives on in Kagoshima today through short interviews with the inheritors of various traditions. Samurai of Culture is also a cultural tourism programme which visits locations in the documentary, as well as many other locations. We will be releasing the full programme later this month, but here is an excerpt looking at Satsuma Biwa, a stringed instrument resembling a lute that was used to accompany narrative storytelling. The samurai of Satsuma were unusual in that they played instruments, something not normally associated with the warrior class. For over 500 years, Satsuma Biwa was used as an educational tool to teach moral behaviour and bravery to each generation of samurai. Satsuma Biwa was said to not be a performance for people to listen to. Instead, it was a way of correcting the heart and mind. Before playing, it is important to forget the self and devote your entire being to the instrument. The biwa is carved from mulberry and has four strings of silk. It is struck by a large plectrum called a bachi. Intended to be played for a small audience in a small room, the songs performed tell stories of bravery, loss, and noble deeds, intended to make the samurai reflect on their own lives and be inspired by the warriors of old. https://lnkd.in/gAQtiqUa #travelandtourism #travelindustry #tourismindustry #travel #tourism #japaneseculture #japan #samurai

On the heels of Taylor Swift, Deep Purple (for music lovers of a certain age) is choosing Singapore only! To answer the question, “Why is it always Singapore?”, just look to simple things… Corruption, or the lack of it. Infrastructure, not just for the musicians but for everyone else! And very importantly, the absence of overzealous religious police… think back… how many performers have run afoul of the archaic (and arcane) rules, and have had to make a beeline out of the country etc etc. It’s easy. And not easy. Getting the hardware together is just throwing money at it. Seeing it through is time and more importantly, political will. Indonesia and Malaysia can do it. It WILL take a generation if they start now… https://lnkd.in/gYa6ry4c

So I was thinking... As I embrace getting "more smarter" with age, I've come to realize that celebrating life is essential, don't you think? And what better way to celebrate than by immersing yourself in the festivals of the city, ah? Anyways, life's too short no to celebrate. And if you start from this May in Kaunas it will not be possible to stop :) So if you are looking for an electrifying way to spice up your season, look no further because Kaunas has got you covered! 💃🎉 Starting from May it's a perfect time to skip work and visit with those living nearby. So, if not on May, then any other time during the summer, Kaunas looks forward to welcoming visitors from neighbouring countries and residents (of course) announcing a summer programme perfect for weekend getaways and celebrations. So why should you make Kaunas your destination for celebration this season? Let me count the ways that sounds interesting to me: - Neighbours day. Calling out to all our Latvian, Estonian, Polish, Lithuanians and other neighboring friends – Kaunas is eagerly awaiting your visit. Let's celebrate together! - Kaunas's Birthday (a Medieval city with a DJ spinning your favorite tunes :) ) - Musical festivals (including an electronic music extravaganza and the iconic 100-year-old song fest). - Ed Sheeran coming (got your ticket yet? there are only a few left for the second concert on August 4th). - Sting with my Song tour is also on my plans :) And much moooore: I leave the article prepared by Kaunas IN about celebrations in a comment and let's meet up in any concert, festival or picnic and be smart to feast life. Contact me if you decide to come, or need some more info. #destinationforcelebration #kaunas #kaunastic #celebrate

Japanese people generally don't like being in the spotlight. It really shows when they go to a classical music concert. The performance is fabulous. And the piece comes to an end. And everybody knows this piece has come to an end because it’s Haydn, it’s not contemporary classical music where nobody has a clue of what’s going the whole time. But Japanese people in the audience will wait until they hear other people clapping. Because there is a slight chance there is more and it will be embarassing if they get it wrong. So there can be a good 5 seconds of awkward silence. So someone in the concert hall staff initiates applause. Then, everybody starts clapping. So giving a standing ovation is out of the question. We need a Westerner in the audience to take the lead in showing your emotional response to an excellent performance. Because if you’re a Japanese person and you find yourself being the only person standing, that’s like the end of your life. I’m exaggerating a bit 😂, but only a little bit 🫠. To find out the cultural reason behind it, please check out my Amazon Best Seller books: Folk Tales of Japan, Underdogs of Japanese History, and Horror Tales of Japan.
