"We need more leads." "Why aren't we getting more MQLs?" So often the focus is on leads and MQLs, when if you look closely... your website messaging doesn't even make sense to your employees. Your ad copy is all about features and functions. Only your product team really knows what you are talking about. You can't skip building the foundation and expect a high-performing demand generation engine. If an engineer went to build a skyscraper-- do you think they are just going to start building? NO. They are going to dig down, build a sturdy foundation to support what they are going to build. Marketing and demand generation is no different. You need to understand your audience, their pain points, how they buy, what emotions trigger their needs, what content they prefer to consume and where they like to consume it. You need to test that messaging and test it again. But also-- you need to make sure it's understandable. Build your marketing foundation. Don't just start expecting MQLs to roll in.
