Closing remarks by European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová on the debate at the European Parliament on "Urgent need to revise the medical device regulation" on 9 October 2024: "I understand the calls for an urgent revision of the Medical Device Regulations. However, after having worked together on extending the transitional periods, I would strongly caution against a rushed initiative. We must get this right on the basis of data and analysis together with the necessary involvement of all the relevant stakeholders. The two Regulations on medical devices and in vitro diagnostics adopted are significant and complex pieces of legislation. The targeted evaluation process has already started and it is important to gather the inputs and viewpoints needed for a thorough assessment. In line with the political indications of President von der Leyen, the Commissioner-Designate for Health will prioritise the evaluation and any necessary follow-up actions. Currently the technology and innovation of the Trust and Safety industry which the Film and Publication Board regulates sits in the Global North, thus making the South a user and consumer. We need to share these opportunities with the emerging tech companies both locally and continentally. Let's us not be a spectator in the economics of Digital transformation like we did with other digital revolution epochs. Let Africa' start-ups stand up and propel the continent on this economic digital revolution journey. For us as the regulator, African safety solutions will assist in dealing with online safety from an African perspective such as linguistic/cultural nuances which are the dominant medium through which prohibited content such as hate and incitement of violence are perpetrated.
