When’s the last time you worried about the authenticity of a Google Ad before clicking on it? We all know that the web is an increasingly risky place when it comes to visiting websites, but not many of us worry about what appears on Google before we’ve even got to our destination. Unfortunately, malvertising is on the rise, and in some forms it's a way to send malicious code your way without you even having to visit a compromised website - the ads will deliver the payload instead. Other ads may appear to be promoting a well-known business, but will be sending you to a phishing site instead. It might be enabled by a legitimate advertiser being compromised, or criminals could have set up their own ad account by posing as a legitimate business. With the ever expanding network of sites that carry ad space, it means that even the most high-profile websites, like the New York Times, Amazon and Yahoo have previously delivered malvertising to their visitors, and with no requirement to visit a website for the attackers to install malware on your device, it’s a scary concept. Recommendations to protect yourself include the usual - you need to make sure your software is up-to-date, and use antivirus software. You can read more about Malvertising on the National Cybersecurity Centre website: https://lnkd.in/gGFa-Uv However, this recent article on the subject from CNBC raises the stakes for online businesses - Google searches are increasingly being targeted, and so experts are recommending not clicking on the top paid result. https://lnkd.in/er3gsu8E There’s no doubt that Google will be doing everything they can to ensure the integrity of Ads, and the ads it produces, but concerned companies might well decide to re-focus their efforts by using Search Engine Optimisation to take the number one result in organic search. If you want to find out more about how an SEO focus can help your site, we’ve got a beginners guide: https://lnkd.in/eM3yrsDV Alternatively, if you'd like professional help in boosting your SEO performance, get in touch - we’re here to help.
