𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳? That is the second half of a famous quote by Lao Tzu. The first half goes like this: 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝘂𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿? Patience is a lost art. Leaders are trained to make quick decisions and solve problems to get things back on track. What if we waited until we had more facts, more context, and a better overall understanding of the problem? The problem will still be there. But, our thoughts and perception of the problem will be sharper. One great example of this principle in practice was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Let's talk about one of history's most costly leadership fails - the Maginot Line. 🏰 Costing over $9 billion in today's money the Maginot Line was a marvel of military engineering. Built along the German border it comprised 50 large forts spaced roughly 9 miles apart, linked by an intricate system of underground tunnels and railroads allowing for the swift movement of troops and equipment. The problem? The German Blitzkrieg just went around it through Belgium. Game over in six weeks. Here's what history can teach us from the Maginot Line: 🕰️ Don't fight yesterday's war The French built perfect fortifications to defend against another WWI while Germany was reimagining how modern wars would be fought. How many of us are still using last decade's solutions for today's challenges? 🚨 Beware the comfort trap That massive investment created a false sense of security. The French got so comfortable with their solution that they stopped looking for weaknesses. (There were plenty!) ⏩ Adaptability beats perfection While France was building perfect static defenses, Germany was developing mobile, adaptable strategies. In today's fast-moving business world, the ability to pivot quickly often beats developing the "perfect" solution. We all have our own "Maginot Lines" - those trusted strategies and systems we've invested heavily in. But are they truly preparing us for future challenges, or are they just making us feel safe? The key isn't to stop building defenses - it's to ensure they're flexible enough to adapt to new threats and opportunities. What's your organization's Maginot Line? The #USNavy Submarine Force is moving out at speed on #ai! Bravo Zulu ("great job" in Navy speak) to TASK FORCE TURING! "The potential of AI to streamline and support submarine operations and sailors is immense. Task Force Turing is supervising all undersea-related AI projects and collaborating with top AI companies. In the past year, TF Turing established a common development environment (CDE) under Project Harbinger to facilitate all aspects of AI/ML operations within the undersea enterprise. The task force has developed, tested, and fielded several ML algorithms for acoustic data streams that have enhanced human-machine team performance by enabling operators to spend less time detecting and classifying acoustic data and more time focused on the remainder of the kill chain. After thorough testing and review, we have loaded open-source large language models into the CDE to support a variety of projects, including quality-assurance work, package development, interactive electronic technical manual creation, and software code refactoring."
