Engineer to Technician 🛠️ After completing 5 years of degree & 3 years as an engineer, I turn into a technician. 😱 Of course the first impression will be seen as a step down, but I see it as a deeper dive into the core of engineering. I always have concern over the “hands-on” aspect and I made this jump to prove myself over it. Breaking the myth of “Engineer cuma baca buku” 📚 Before I take this decision I ask myself repeatedly on who is an engineer? Does the role or responsibility makes you an engineer? 🧐 NO. For me an engineer is a problem solver using correct analysis and ensure it is reliable. And that’s exactly what I’m going to try adapt into the technicians work culture. When I decided to do this transition, I faced many concerns and backlash. But I believe in stick to my plan till reach the goal 😉 I owe big time to Kausalya Tamalmani for advising me throughout this transition 🙏🏼 Nevertheless, I will keep on involving engineering into my work. Had a thought that many of you guys may be new to the idea of shutdowns ( currently the career path I'm pursuing as an ANDT Engineer). For those of you who don't know what shutdowns are, I wanted to share more insights into this - Shutdowns, Turnarounds, and Outages (STO) are commonly used terms, often interchangeably, to describe a planned or unplanned period of time in which a plant/facility, unit, or piece of equipment is out of service. In many process industries (e.g., refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, power generation, etc.), equipment operates 24/7, making it difficult to perform necessary inspection and maintenance work without taking said equipment offline. For this reason, facilities routinely schedule turnarounds, where a section of an industrial plant or the entire facility is shut down to perform major maintenance, overhaul, and/or repair operations, as well as to inspect, test, and replace process materials and equipment. These planned events also provide owner/operators with the opportunity to perform debottlenecking, process upgrades, and capital project improvements while the unit or facility is offline. The primary purpose of turnarounds is to conduct the activities necessary to keep the plant running safely, reliably, and as efficiently as possible. Sometimes equipment goes offline unexpectedly or operators are forced to shut down equipment or an entire facility due to unforeseen events like power outages, fires, mechanical failures, weather events, or losses of primary containment (LOPC). These unplanned shutdowns or outages may or may not require immediate action, depending on the circumstances. The cost of a shutdown, turnaround, or outage can be substantial, so owner/operators strive to optimize planning and work whenever possible. Far in advance of a turnaround, operators begin planning schedules and coordinating resources to ensure that personnel, budgets, equipment, and access points are available to accomplish the turnaround objectives safely and efficiently. Process Engineer

I am a maintenance technician with a background in mechanics, but when I arrived in Portugal, I realized that the professional profile here requires extensive knowledge in both mechanics and electricity. With no prior experience in electrical systems, I started studying intensively. Today, I am taking a course in electrical commands taught by Professor Fernando Santana, whose highly practical and didactic material has significantly contributed to my progress. In the daily routine of industrial maintenance, a technician must be prepared to identify and repair faults, ensure operational safety, and restore equipment functionality as quickly as possible. Maintenance teams are usually multidisciplinary, with professionals skilled not only in mechanics and electricity but also in electronics, metalwork, or welding, adding valuable expertise to the group. Some of the electrical challenges I have encountered include sensor failures, machines not starting due to tripped circuit breakers, damaged buttons and selector switches, burned fuses, faulty variable speed drives, and loss of signal in PLCs. A significant milestone in my development was learning to read electrical schematics—an essential tool for diagnosing and resolving issues efficiently. While initially challenging due to my lack of familiarity, I can now use schematics effectively, which has been crucial for my technical growth.
