Today, March of Dimes released our newest report, Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts Across the US. Maternity care deserts are counties without a hospital with obstetric services, birth center, or obstetric provider. We found that over 35% of US counties are maternity care deserts, leaving millions of women without access to the care they need for a healthy pregnancy. We’re pushing for solutions like equitable Medicaid reimbursement, increased support for midwifery, mobile health units, and expanded telehealth services to help bridge the gap in care. We can improve outcomes for all moms and babies—starting now. Visit www.marchofdimes.org/mcdr to read the full report and learn more about the maternal and infant health crisis and how you can help drive solutions. #MaternityCareDeserts #HealthEquity

March of Dimes today released "Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts Across the US," highlighting the worsening state of maternity care affecting countless communities. We can improve outcomes for all moms and babies—starting now. It's time to raise our voices and push for immediate action to address these gaps and ensure that every mother and baby has access to the care they need. Why do inequalities exist in maternity care? The NHS recognised disparities in maternity outcomes when setting up a national Taskforce in 2022 to investigate the topic. Our latest research in Haringey, prompted by high stillbirth rates in the borough, explored the experience of maternity services for seldom heard groups. We found: 🗣 Communication: people with English as a 2nd language were less like to receive info, and sometimes struggled to access info in their 1st language 🤷♀️ Choice: understanding of cultural needs wasn't always consistent, and respondents didn't always feel able to raise concerns. People felt less happy about post-natal care in particular 👩⚕️ Support: only half reported having a named midwife. We recommended one midwife through pregnancy and birth Our recommendations aim to improve people's access to and experience of maternity services in the borough https://lnkd.in/eXPK5bqk #maternity #healthinequalities #haringey #healthwatch

The RCOG has responded to the Maternity and Newborn Safety Investigations programme’s (MNSI) Annual report. The report details MNSI’s work over the past twelve months across key priorities, including reducing the inequity of outcomes for black and ethnic minority women and birthing people and their babies. Everyone accessing maternity services in this country has a right to receive high quality, personalised care whatever their ethnicity, health profile or socioeconomic background. Supporting improving maternity services is a College priority and we are committed to using MNSI programme learnings in our work. Cases of potential severe brain injury continued to be the significant majority of referrals to MSNI in 2023/4. This reinforces the importance of the Avoiding Brain Injury in Childbirth (ABC) programme, which we are delivering with the Royal College of Midwives and The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute. This programme aims to support maternity services to improve and personalise care in labour, and to reduce the risks of two significant contributors to avoidable brain injury. The MSNI report also highlights opportunities to drive improvement in maternity telephone triage. The RCOG developed our Maternity Triage Good Practice Paper to support local maternity services to offer responsive, safe and evidence-based care through their units. It provides advice on how to deploy NHS resources most effectively and potential additional requirements. You can read the full RCOG response here: https://brnw.ch/21wOsgB
