When managing behaviours of concern among deeply hurt and troubled young people, remember this simple rule: Whatever the intervention you feel you have to make, you will need to turn your mind to the opposite action in order to avoid reinforcing to the young person that they are inadequate, unworthy, undeserving, and/or unlovable (and that adults are mean, nasty, uncaring). So, if you take something away, give something in return. If you admonish, praise for something else. If you restrict access to something, be generous in other ways. #childwelfare #childprotectiveservices #childprotection #childprotectionleadership #socialcare #fostercare #kinshipcare #traumainformed Department for Child Protection, South Australia Department for Education, South Australia Tusla - Child and Family Agency Patrick Tomlinson lyn butterworth

Today is Universal Children’s Day, celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. In the article, “Protecting Children Online on Universal Children’s Day,” Sharon Iskra, Bailey Glasser partner and leader of our Institutional Abuse & Neglect team, encourages us to celebrate by reflecting on all the wonders of childhood: the innocence, joy, curiosity, and energy, but realizing the hazards to today’s children, especially online, where children can be trapped and manipulated through child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). “It’s up to every one of us to protect kids, whether they’re our own or those we encounter through work or friends. Child safety IS your business – and at Bailey Glasser, it’s our business too,” Sharon writes. One of the best things we can do to protect a child is to be a genuinely safe person of trust for them. Practice these fundamentals as appropriate in the context of your relationship with a child: 1. Parents/caregivers, talk to your children regularly and in age-appropriate ways about online safety. 2. Empower children, teach them to trust their instincts and repeat to them that if something doesn’t seem right or frightens them, take it to a safe adult right away. 3. Teach body integrity and self-worth. 4. Remind children that adults are supposed to protect children, and children are supposed to be children. Read the full article to learn more tips about how to be a person of trust for children, how to protect them from CSAM, and for nationally sourced resources on how to begin talking to your child. https://ow.ly/kCk650UaZGz Learn more information on Sharon Iskra by visiting here: https://ow.ly/2EaR50UaZGy #UniversalChildrensDay #CSAM #Onlinesafety #Abuse #Neglect #BaileyGlasser

The alarming rise of over 50% in child abuse cases in Hong Kong is heartbreaking*. Do you know what behaviours are classified as "child abuse"? What steps should we take if we encounter any suspected violence? Neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse - these are all forms of child abuse according to the definition by Social Welfare Department. Growing up with violence seriously affects a child’s development, dignity, and physical and psychological integrity, therefore please do not turn a blind eye to any suspected violence against children. Your decision could change a abused child's fate. Besides public education, we are also dedicated to child protection work in Hong Kong. Through parent education and institutional child safeguarding training, we aim to cultivate positive parenting mindsets and reduce the occurrence of child abuse. Just like in our Heart to Heart Parent-Child Programme, advocating for non-violent communication between parents and children. Parents can learn about positive parenting and empower their children's problem-solving abilities. 👉 Let us join hands to build a child-friendly, non-violent social environment for our next generation. It is not the case that we do not need child protection, nor is it the case that all children would choose to return to live with their birth parents. Many children form deep and lasting bonds in foster care. Others experience ongoing family connectedness in kinship care that mitigates the worst aspects of being placed away from family (that is, feeling unlovable, unacceptable, unworthy). However, it has been my unmatched experience engaging with children and young people in out-of-home care in South Australia that their voice is not always heard , nor their best interests understood, especially with respect to their need/desire for (re)connection with birth parents/family. The consequences of this are far-reaching, extending well beyond their time in care. As I posted last week, child protection authorities need to take expert advice about ways to reform the local system, especially from the children and young people. In the linked video I have attempted to distil important aspects of the experience and needs of the children and young people I have engaged with, across a career spanning almost thirty years as a Clinical Psychologist, delivering assessment and psychotherapy services, expert consultation, training and development, and supervision, in the sector. #childprotectionreform #childprotectionweek2024 #childwelfare #childwelfareleadership #childprotection #fostercare #kinshipcare #socialcare #traumainformed Katrine Hildyard MP Peter Malinauskas Shona Reid Sally Rhodes Anne Nicolaou Patrick Tomlinson

What value practice expertise? Now in my 30th year of continuous service provision to deeply hurt and troubled children, and adult stakeholders in their life, I continue to face difficulty in having my voice heard in the context of a fragmented child protection system where true expertise is easily dispensed with in favour of the partisanship that arises in a competitive tendering environment, and titles. While this upsets and angers me, my greatest concern is the impact this has on service provision to our children and young people (and, frequently, their carers) who almost daily tell me I cannot ever retire. I think I can keep going another 10 years, but will my voice be heard better after 40 years? It is (past) time to listen to and respect practice expertise. #childprotection #childwelfare #socialcare #traumainformed

Child Care in Ontario is in a Crisis! The Financial Accountability Office of Ontario estimates that in 2026 "the families of 227,146 children under age six... would be left wanting but unable to access $10-a-day child care" if the province doesn't increase the number of available spaces.
