As leaders, it's essential to remember that the way we treat our staff should reflect the same care and empathy we offer our clients. This means understanding that just like clients, staff come with their own stories, challenges, and experiences. When we lead with empathy, patience, and active listening, we create an environment where people feel safe, valued, and understood. This not only fosters trust but also encourages growth and resilience—qualities that ripple out into the impact we make in the community as nonprofits. Let’s commit to treating our teams with the compassion and support they deserve, because a healthy, supported staff leads to stronger, more effective service to those we serve.

🌵 Are you planning to attend the National Assembly for the National Council of the United States, Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix 🤠 We will be amongst some of the most caring, gospel-centered leaders in the faith-based ✝ nonprofit space & I'm honored to be amongst them to share how we help others to discover and deepen a relationship with their neighbors. Some key takeaways I have learned here at Arreva from our partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Councils & Conferences all over the country: 🔹CHANGE IS HARD! And making systemic changes that help build more personal relationships with Neighbors, Givers & Vincentians at scale can feel like boiling the ocean! 🌊 🔸 Emphasizing Neighbor & Vincentian testimonies 🗣 is essential. Donors connect with real gospel-impact, making it crucial to integrate family & friends' voices into our fundraising efforts. 🔹 The digital landscape 🚀 is changing rapidly. Leveraging technology for community engagement, data analytics and fundraising campaigns is more critical than ever. 🔸 The ways we've always done this work within nonprofits isn't the solution for today's issues. Manual efforts can’t fix this. Automation, integration, and personal support 🙏 is now a must-have.

During the pandemic, a school official shared in a video: "Lately, I've had many, many individuals come up to me while I'm grocery shopping to share their opinions on what we should be doing differently." While I empathize that 2020-2021 were years with unique challenges around community engagement, I think we can also agree: A community engagement strategy that relies on chance encounters at public locations is not the ideal way to build trust. In my post below, I share of a client who truly is dedicated to designing a community engagement strategy to build trust. It's such a cool and rewarding process to *get* to design an ideal engagement strategy - that it's motivated me to write my next blog some of the most effective community engagement strategies. - Strategies that are relational, not transactional. - Strategies that reduce bias. - And strategies that focus on opportunities for co-creation of solutions. But before I start the blog, I'm curious. ➡️Do you find that most of the organizations with which you work have an opportunistic style of community engagement? ➡️Or, are you seeing a lot of good examples of intentional community engagement by organizations? Thanks for sharing.
What a gorgeous early morning view of the Ohio River from yesterday’s community focus group in Marietta, OH. It’s really rewarding to see a client show genuine interest in what communities and partner organizations have to say, and identify specific ways to directly incorporate that feedback into programming. Perhaps it’s easier to listen to communities if you are a small nonprofit who is fully embedded into the community where you work. But it takes more planning and targeted engagement when you have a wider geography that your organization is covering. In these cases, it takes intention to truly listen to communities and design engagement sessions in a way that’s built around relationships and building trust. We’re grateful that Sustainable Economies was brought on as a partner to facilitate these important engagement sessions.

Reposting with deep love and respect for program officers who refuse to give up on this work. The findings Magic Cabinet lists as starting points—recognizing Native intersectionality, investing in intermediaries, committing to long-term funding, and building authentic relationships—are all points staff have advocated for since before I joined the team in April 2021. It shouldn’t take 41+ months to grasp these “emerging needs” and concepts. If you’re listening to community, present in sector discussions, and examining inequitable philanthropy, it shouldn’t be a surprise how little funding goes to Native-led nonprofits or the philanthropy-constructed barriers Native-led organizations face. Unfortunately, this isn’t new. It’s only a “‘new to us’ grantmaking area” because you’ve yet to make a longterm financial commitment. This illustrates one of the issues that Community-Centric Fundraising advocates for: when will funders move from talking to investing in long-term, meaningful ways? This is a broader call to action for all of philanthropy: Let’s stop the endless learning phase and commit to transformative investments now. Philanthropy must do better. #philanthropy #equity #communitycentricfundraising #ccf #fundraising #grantmaking
As we began to explore funding in Native communities, we knew we needed to connect directly with Native leaders and organizations to build trust, deepen our knowledge of the funding landscape, and understand how we could best support emerging priorities. In our latest blog post, our team shares insights from our learning journey, which includes lessons from the Native Voices Rising Funder Learning Fellowship and 2024 Native Americans in Philanthropy Conference.
