After coming back from MCM Comic-Con // EGX Rezzed this weekend, I was reflecting on the fact that we don’t have a big consumer facing games event in the UK anymore. I love that the indie festivals are still going strong. Norwich Games Festival, Rapture Games Festival in Medway and the new Debug Festival in Nottingham are great to discover some really cool indie gems. Games London also have London games festival with lots of smaller fringe events that are super fun as well. Shout out to Game Dev Local for their series of events held throughout the year. I’ve never been to Scottish games week but it’s definitely on my bucket list. We’re putting on our first games and esports festival at University of West London on the 9th November showcasing our courses, student work and interactive panels. You can register and find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eRYpUjZK But there is definitely a gap in the market for the gamer crowd to spend a weekend playing and discovering new games. Now with Insomnia, WASD gone and EGX as a small section of MCM - the closest big festival in Europe for all the major announcements for big titles will be at Gamescom. MCM this year was fantastic for developers as I’m sure there was a lot of crossover in terms of audience. But what about the gamers? What if you aren’t an anime or comic fan and just want to play some video games? Food for thought… I hope that over the next few years we see the emergence of some more in-person events that target gamers specifically.
