Today marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to reflect on the profound loss caused by residential schools. It’s a day to remember and honour the Indigenous children who never returned home and recognize the strength and resilience of the Survivors, their families, and their communities. The systemic harms of these schools have left deep intergenerational wounds, the impact of which continues to be felt today. Acknowledging this painful chapter in our history is essential to the ongoing process of healing and reconciliation as we work together to address these lasting injustices. Let today serve as a reminder that the journey towards justice and equality requires each of us to do our part. Whether through education, advocacy, or solidarity, we must work together to honour the hard truths of our past and build a future founded on respect and shared humanity. #everychildmatters #orangeshirtday

🌍 Today, on World Children's Day, we celebrate the rights and resilience of all children worldwide. At Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE), we are reminded of the often-overlooked challenges faced by the 2.1 million children across Europe with a parent in prison, whose rights often go undermined. The rights and needs 📜 of children with an imprisoned parent are a blind spot for most governments and can fall through the cracks of even the most elaborate nets of social protection. This year marks the 35th anniversary 🎂 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure that every child grows up in an environment that nurtures their dreams, safeguards their well-being and protects their rights. For children with imprisoned parents, this means recognising their unique needs, championing their voices and bridging gaps across all relevant systems. 🤝 On this day, we urge policymakers, professionals and communities to step up. Together, we can create societies where all children are recognised as inidividual rights bearers and where their resilience is met with meaningful action from local, national and international duty-bearers. Because every child matters ❤️. #Worldchildrensday #Childrensrights

There’s a new plan to reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland’s criminal justice system. Better Justice Together is the Queensland Government’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Strategy 2024–2031. It was created in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and community-controlled organisations, government agencies and non-government organisations. We would like to thank everyone who shared their story, insight and experience with us. Your voices shaped Better Justice Together and informed the plan for change moving forward. Better Justice Together features four focus areas in the plan to create change: - working together - early intervention and prevention with local decision-making for safer communities and families - doing justice differently for a better and fairer justice system - address offending and reduce re-offending. Today on Human Rights Day, two members of our Dallaire Family - Madeline Zutt our Policy and Advocacy Officer, and Dr. Shelly Whitman, our Executive Director are presenting a chapter they have contributed at the book launch of "Hand-In-Hand? Canada at the Human Rights and Peacebuilding Nexus". Their chapter, entitled "Why Canada Needs to Promote a Children, Peace, and Security Agenda", punctuates the importance of the mission of the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security. "If the world is serious about operationalizing prevention, then there is a need to view children – their protection but more importantly their agency, their perspectives and their participation - as integral to disrupting cycles of violence and achieving sustainable peace and security." This is a momentous day for the rights of some of the most vulnerable children in Scotland. This change recognises that all under-18s are children, who have rights and are in need, and deserving of, care and support. Sending them to Young Offenders Institutions often only served to re-traumatise many children, and did not help them to stop reoffending or move on to positive destinations upon release. Evidence shows that many children who have come into conflict with the law need therapeutic support, and staff trained in taking a trauma-informed approach. This is required to support children to desist from offending and reengage with education and employment opportunities. We and many others have said for years that prison is no place for a child and we welcomed the cross-party recognition of this during the Children Care and Justice Bill debate earlier this year. Moving all children out of YOIs is a landmark step in Scotland realising the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and creating safer communities for all of us. The Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry QLD is a crucial step toward reconciliation. Acknowledging and addressing past injustices is essential for building a foundation of healing and respect, especially for those of our First Nations people whose stories and experiences have long been silenced and overlooked. Within just days of taking power, the LNP is set to abolish Queensland's first real step towards affirmative action for hearing the voices of First Nations people. We did not come this far, to only come this far. If you agree please sign the petition to save the Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry, together we can create a more inclusive and respectful future for Queensland. https://lnkd.in/gitv6nTG #TruthTelling #HealingInquiry #Queensland
