#BeforeAndAfterSSETS It is the fourth week of serious engagement with Dr. Akanimo Odon and Dr Viola Akhigbe on the Stimulating Sustainable Entrepreneurial Thinking in Scientists #SSETS. #MyKeyLessonsOnSSETS Two key lessons which have impacted me the most are: 1. Seeing problems as raw materials for growth and development. This is the real deal for, as there would always be problems or so, it appears. The ability to turn such things into working tools to get better is being tapped in this program. 2. Incorporating one's hobbies in one's career would go a long way in achieving fulfillment and greatness. I have learned that doing one thing to earn living and another to attain happiness is not the best. It is possible to incorporate and be the best. All thanks to Lancaster University, British Council, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, National Universities Commission (NUC) and the University of Lagos for this cherished opportunity to grow into an entrepreneurial academic.

#SSETS - - Stimulating Sustainable Entrepreneurial Thinking in Scientists #BeforeAndAfterWithSSETS Since joining the transformational staff pilot program "Career Enhancement and Enterprise Development for Nigerian Universities, " I've experienced significant growth, #career improvements, in just six to seven weeks. Here are three key ways the program has impacted me: 1. Enhanced Research Communication: Before the program, I primarily used LinkedIn only to announce new publications. Now, I understand the value of sharing research throughout its development. This allows for early feedback and potential improvements before final publication. Additionally, communicating your research in simpler terms can directly benefit those who need it most and generate valuable insights. Remember, be strategic about what you share before final publication. 2. Expanding Collaboration Horizons: Previously, my research collaborations were mostly within similar fields like soil science and its specializations. However, the #SSETS program has opened my mind to the power of collaborating with researchers from diverse disciplines like computer science, food science, history, and architecture. This multidisciplinary approach, prevalent in the developed world, is crucial for career advancement and tackling complex societal issues. 3. Industry and NGO Engagement in Education and Research: Prior to the program, I hadn't considered inviting industry professionals, government officials, or NGO representatives as guest lecturers. The #SSETS program has shown me the value of collaboration with these groups. Their involvement can enrich student experiences and lead to research that addresses real-world societal challenges. #TakeHomeLesson There are always multiple ways to approach things effectively. By staying open-minded, we can continuously learn and improve! Many thanks to the sponsors and supporters of this great initiative including the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Lancaster University, British Council, National Universities Commission (NUC), and Ahmadu Bello University. I would also like to appreciate our energetic coaches, mentors and coordinators Dr. Akanimo Odon Dr Viola Akhigbe Professor Aisha Abdulkadir on the program. #Entrepreneurial #Academics

👉 This week in our series of PMIC student portraits meet 👩🎓 Lorna Merekaje, our graduate from South Sudan giving an in-depth insight in her PMIC experience: 🥥 IN A NUTSHELL Obtaining the Master's Degree in Public Management in International Cooperation (PMIC) has been one of my most fulfilling experiences. The programme’s design and selection of the modules was responsive to my needs and has enhanced my career prospects. The knowledge acquired has equipped me with more practical tools and normative framework necessary for understanding my role as a civil society activist, development and public policy practitioner. The knowledge acquired during the PMIC master’s programme has prepared me to better understand governance, public management and development cooperation. 🌱 DEVELOPMENT My experience was indeed a journey of intellectual growth, self-realization and personal career development. After completing the programme, I clearly know that my place is not as a pure academic but rather a pracademic. 💯 SKILLS I think the course design and modules offered are all relevant and responsive to my quest for more hands-on skills and career development. The intensity of the programme sharpened my analytical skills. More specifically my ability to identify policy gaps and effectively contribute in designing responsive policy solutions and advise different institutions, and processes. 📚 THESIS Having written my thesis on "Participatory Governance as an Ideal Approach for Effective Multi-Level Governance Systems – A Case Study of South Sudan", I can confidently attest that I now have a better understanding of different governance processes, of the concept of social contract, constitutionalism and development cooperation. Most interestingly, the master’s programme has contributed to strengthening my knowledge of international law and constitutional governance. PMIC has exposed me to understanding several normative frameworks that are relevant to my work and I have developed more interest to scientifically interrogate different spheres of my work. 🚀 FUTURE Having successfully completed the master’s programme, I can now say that I am ready to embark on further research, knowledge generation and register for a PhD programme if the opportunity arises. I have developed research interest in governance and public management, development cooperation and interrogating intra-African and global intercultural dynamism which influence several regional, continental and global decisions. 🫵 FYI I strongly recommend PMIC master’s degree to fellow civil society activists, development and aid workers or bureaucrats in public service. 💻 CAREER Lorna is founder and Secretary General of South Sudan Democratic Engagement, Monitoring and Observation Programme (SSuDEMOP).
