HOT OFF THE PRESS: Do we all need shared E-scooters? An accessibility-centered spatial equity evaluation approach. Is the quantitative evaluation of mobility equity being conducted accurately? For this approach, we usually compare the social categories and determine who is a user and who is not of different modes of transport. Commonly these differences are due to the different abilities, perceptions, opportunities and barriers of the different social groups. However, sometimes these barriers are not present and we see a difference in usage between social groups. In this latest study, examining e-scooters as a case study, Mohamed Abouelela, David Duran Rodas, and Constantinos Antoniou have suggested that non-users may avoid scooters not only because of barriers, but also because they lack nearby activities suitable for scooter rides in disadvantaged areas. Conclusion: In order to make e-scooters a competitive mode of transportation in disadvantaged areas, urban structural solutions such as densification of land use and promotion of different activities should be considered first. "Shared mobility can get us there faster." 🌬 This is how "The Little Big Think Tank" book by Bolt ends (https://lnkd.in/dbsj6A-h). The book, written by 37 kids and 1 urbanist, offers a unique perspective. 📖 While some statistics in the book may seem overly optimistic (for more balanced data, refer to reports by the United Nations: Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 or World Cities Report 2022), it certainly provides food for thought. 🤔 "Imagination" is a key theme throughout the book. It's something "kids have in abundance but adults often grow out of." It might sound cheesy, but... There's a lesson for all of us: when discussing the future of cities, the kids repeatedly highlight three characteristics – safe for people, a feeling of community, and a green environment. These are exactly what smart cities aim for. 🌆 A thought that struck me while reading: it's fascinating how kids naturally desire joy and community. Sadly, as we grow up, this often shifts to a desire for ownership and status.🕴 When you hear about smart cities, sustainable mobility, and other eco-social terms, don't be dismissive. "We don't need to give up our cars completely; we just need to break the habit of using them automatically" (Do The Right Mix: https://lnkd.in/dg-CWr77). 🚲 🚃 🛴 I highly recommend taking a moment to check out the book. You know… 🚌🛣️ When more people take the bus, there’s no need to use the shoulder to bypass traffic in the first place. *And* riders don’t have to worry about looking at the road or parking when they get into the city. 🥴 But let’s be realistic: Car culture isn’t going away anytime soon 🚗 at least not in my hometown of Chicago. (Sorry to all my European #urbanplanning instructors.) 🤷 How can we make a dent in our car culture for good? Look beyond the cities ➡️ Here’s what I want to see in the burbs: 🅿️ more park-and-rides 📈 more frequency of buses and trains 🚏 more stops in underserved areas ^ Even if — no, especially if!!! — those areas are have high tax brackets. 🗳️ Vote for representatives who want to see these projects through, and vote for these initiatives too. (It’s already happening with the South Shore Line from Indiana into the city!) #Publictransportation should be the slick, reliable option — the *lifeblood* of a city — like it is in the metro London and Berlin areas. Don’t give it the cold shoulder 🚌
