Shortly after I qualified as an IFA, in my early 20’s, I attended a celebration for some friends. A rather pompous senior accountant started chatting to me and came out with the following unpleasant remark,…… "So you just want to flog products? It’s such a shame you didn't decide to follow one of the professions.” At the time I was young and not 100% sure of myself or my career choice, so sadly I didn’t provide an adequate answer and got very upset (thankfully in private!) after the interaction. I did have doubts about my path - it seemed that there were a lot of ‘product floggers’ out there in those days and having attended exam halls where I was an alien being in a sea of (what to me at the time) were elderly men, I felt out of place. I had a choice - I could let that remark fester, changing the course of my career, which could have easily happened at that early stage. Or I could keep my head held high, believe in what I stood for, and keep my determination to do the right things by clients. I would like to think that my record of doing the right things for clients over 29 years speaks for itself - I chose the second path. If you are young and starting out as an IFA, don’t let anyone define your choice of career with their misjudgements, when actually as IFAs we provide financial peace of mind and create secure financial futures for our clients. Keep on doing the right things for the right reasons and your career purpose will flourish. #purpose #leadership #career

Just like this stunning cake, my career has been a work of art - layered with challenges, decorated with achievements, and sweetened by growth. This journey hasn't just been about balance sheets and audits; it's been about perseverance, continuous learning, and making a tangible impact. Results day can take you to extremes. If you have gotten the result you worked for then many, many congratulations. That's really great! We are happy for you. If you haven't, then please reach out - to your tutor, or to anyone who will support you. Failing exams is tough. Very tough. It's easy to take it personally - because it IS personal. It IS an assessment of you. But it's NOT an assessment of all of you. Just an assessment of your performance on one day, for one exam, with a particular set of questions. Do not let it define you. We could give you a list of partners of major accounting firms - or major tuition firms - who failed exams. Some failed many times. Some failed 19 exams in a row. (Like me). They kept going and they succeeded. So what did I learn? 1. To reflect. If something really isn't working, change it. 2. Determination. If this is what you want, work for it. Prioritise it. Make space for it. Get the help and resources you need. 3. We are not alone, no matter how lonely you feel. Reach out. One day this experience will enable you to support others, knowing you understand.

I took a step to honor a cornerstone of my identity and career: Three weeks ago, I had the Coat of Arms from my accounting designation (CMA now CPA) tattooed on my arm above my phoenix. Now it is is healed up enough to be photo worthy. This emblem holds deep significance, not only for me but also for the legacy of the accounting profession. I have been doing a lot of research on this coat of arms: Registered with the Governor General’s office in Canada and originally recorded in the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 30, 1967, its rich symbolism resonates with the values that guide my life and work: 🪶 The quills represent the discipline of keeping books. ⚙️ The cogwheel symbolizes industry and resilience; qualities critical to overcoming challenges and driving innovation. 🗝️ The key alludes to security, a cornerstone of trust in our profession. 🪙 The bezants signify money, reflecting the economic impact accountants help shape. 🌿 The annual honesty, also known as "silver dollar," ties to truthfulness and integrity; two principles essential to accounting and leadership. This tattoo is more than an emblem; it’s a reminder of my mission: to inspire growth, resilience, and positive change. It reflects my commitment to the core values that define my life: ✅ Loving & Supportive – Building relationships based on trust and collaboration ✅ Innovative & Energetic – Tackling challenges with creativity and determination ✅ Resilient & Community Minded – Helping others grow and thrive As a professional accountant and lifelong learner, I see this Coat of Arms as a symbol of the incredible journey I’ve been on since earning an award of excellence while in College in 2001 and then earning my designation in 2005 It serves as a reminder to keep moving forward with passion and purpose. #Leadership #Accounting #GrowthMindset #Resilience #PersonalGrowth #Inspiration
