Early detection of rheumatic heart disease is crucial to prevent disease progression. Standard echocardiography is often not feasible in high-prevalence areas due to cost and complexity. Therefore handheld echocardiography might be a low-cost, easy-to-use alternative. -> A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate its performance in diagnosing in high-prevalence areas. -> The results showed handheld echocardiography had high sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy for diagnosing rheumatic heart disease. -> There was some variation in results across studies, possibly due to differences in disease prevalence, severity, and operator expertise. -> Handheld echocardiography has a high diagnostic performance compared to standard methods in high-prevalence areas. We’re proud to be a part of a prospective cohort study “Patient reported outcomes in patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease”. ⌚️Hyfe Cough Monitor will be used to measure cough objectively and continuously. Understanding the trajectory of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (#NTMPD) demands comprehensive longitudinal data. This study aims to establish three cohorts, providing insights into disease progression and treatment outcomes over a period of 24 months. NTMPD is becoming an increasingly common disease that causes chronic and progressive disability and studies like these have the potential to positively impact many lives. Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. ▶️Rare Disease Day is happening every year on 28 February (or 29 in leap years)—the rarest day of the year. Did you know that there are more than 6.000 diagnosed rare diseases? 😓72% of the diseases are genetic and almost 1 out of 5 cancers is rare. Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatment. Quintessentially disabling, the patients quality of life is affected by the lack or loss of autonomy due to the chronic, progressive, degenerative, and frequently life-threatening aspects of the disease. The fact that there are often no existing effective cures adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families.
