I'm thrilled to share that my latest research paper, titled "Simultaneous Removal of PAHs from Contaminated Soil and Effluent by Integrating Soil Washing and Advanced Oxidation Processes in a Continuous System: Water Saving, Optimization, and Scale-Up Modeling", has been published in the June 2024 issue of Water Research, a leading journal in environmental science. This study explores the integration of photocatalytic ozonation and soil washing for the efficient degradation of PAHs from the environment in a continuous system. We evaluated the performance of the system and deeply investigated the mechanism of the photocatalytic ozonation process using DFT calculations. Additionally, we specified radical contributions in PAH degradation. This work suggests a promising and practical approach for contaminated soil remediation without producing polluted water. Our findings revealed that at a large scale (100 kg soil), the proposed system led to a reduction in energy consumption and the required washing solution by up to 50% and 80%, respectively. #OnTheBeamlines: A University of Guelph research team has been studying earthworms using our CLS to determine the scale of microplastics pollution on freshwater and soil ecosystems, a phenomenon less studied compared to oceans. The goal is to determine whether microplastics, heavily resistant to degradation, could be absorbed through the earthworms’ digestive tract and produce harmful effects to their organisms. As ecosystem indicators, earthworms could offer critical data to assess the overall risk of microplastics and their effect on soil. Detecting microplastics on animal tissue using the especially sensitive X-ray of our BMIT-BM beamline is a novel approach. The team, led by professors Adam Gillespie and Ryan Prosser, includes PhD students Moira Ijzerman and Nicholas Letwin. I am thrilled to announce the publication of our new journal titled "Insights into Water Absorption Characteristics of Various Waste-Based Inorganic Additives and Their Application for Soil Stabilization." This study delves into the fascinating world of waste stabilizers, investigating the crucial factors influencing water absorption capacity such as porosity, hydration, and microstructural characteristics. Key highlights of our study include: 🔍 In-depth analysis of water absorption characteristics across different waste stabilizers. 🔬 Examination of porosity, hydration, and microstructural features to understand performance. 🌱 Exploration of applications for soil stabilization, promoting sustainable practices. Our findings have significant implications for enhancing soil stability while concurrently addressing waste management challenges.
