The new Unichiller CO2 is another milestone in environmentally friendly refrigeration technology at Huber. The new circulation cooler works with CO2 as a refrigerant. CO2 or carbon dioxide (also known as R744) is a natural component of the air and has been used in refrigeration technology since the 19th century. CO2 is a colorless gas that liquefies under pressure. It has no ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0) and, with a GWP = 1, has a negligible global warming potential. For example, if 1 kg of CO2 escapes into the atmosphere through a leak in the refrigeration circuit, this is 3780 times less harmful than the common refrigerant R404A. In addition, CO2 is a so-called natural refrigerant that occurs in very large quantities in nature, meaning it does not have to be produced with great energy expenditure. In addition, CO2 has other advantages as a refrigerant; it is non-flammable, non-toxic and chemically inactive. The new Unichiller CO2 is therefore a 100% environmentally friendly alternative to cooling devices with conventional synthetic refrigerants. The Unichiller CO2 offers pioneering refrigeration technology and Huber's proven circulation cooler technology. Advantages: Proven Unichiller technology Environmentally friendly refrigeration technology Ozone depletion potential equal to zero (ODP = 0) Global warming potential negligible (GWP = 1) Very good energy efficiency Refrigerant is non-flammable and non-toxic High operational reliability Whisper-quiet operation (only 60 dB) Future-proof investment (not affected by the F-gas regulation) Intermass Fischer-Asia Pte Ltd Benjamin Chan Razis Halim James Chong Tiong Wai #ThermalTechnik

R290: The Future of Refrigerants? 🌍 Before diving into the potential of R290 (propane), let's review some key considerations when evaluating refrigerants: 1️⃣ Toxicity Refrigerants are classified as: A: Low toxicity B: High toxicity (e.g., Ammonia R717 is a well-known example). 2️⃣ Flammability Categories: 1: Non-flammable 2L: Mildly flammable (low burning velocity) 2: Mildly flammable (standard velocity) 3: Flammable (e.g., Propane - R290). 3️⃣ Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) Measures the refrigerant's impact on ozone layer depletion, benchmarked against R11 (ODP = 1). Most current refrigerants have an ODP of 0. 4️⃣ Global Warming Potential (GWP) Measures the refrigerant's greenhouse effect, benchmarked against CO2 (R744 = GWP of 1). Common examples: R410A: GWP = 2088 R134a: GWP = 1430 R32: GWP = 675 So, what makes R290 stand out? Ultra-low GWP: At just (3), R290 is far more sustainable than traditional refrigerants. Performance: Operates efficiently at evaporator temperatures as low as -44°C, making it suitable for heat pumps. Eco-friendly: Zero ODP and minimal environmental impact. The Challenge? 🔥 R290 is flammable (classified as a Category 3 refrigerant), with a heating value of 25.4 MJ/m³. This means it requires careful handling and stringent safety measures during storage, transportation, and operation. With its low environmental footprint and versatile application, R290 is paving the way for a more sustainable future in refrigeration. However, safety and proper training remain critical to its widespread adoption. What do you think? Is R290 the refrigerant of the future? 💡 Let's discuss! #HVAC #polimi #R290

Understanding A2L Refrigerants: A New Era in Cooling Solutions A2L refrigerants are a new class of cooling agents that are mildly flammable and have a lower global warming potential (GWP) than traditional refrigerants like R-410A. These refrigerants offer a balance of low toxicity (A) and low flammability (2L), making them safer and more environmentally friendly. Their rise is driven by regulatory changes like the Kigali Amendment, which targets the phase-down of high-GWP refrigerants, and their improved energy efficiency. Common A2L refrigerants include R-32 (for air conditioning) and R-1234yf (used in automotive cooling). While A2L refrigerants are only mildly flammable, proper safety protocols like ventilation, leak detection, and the use of personal protective equipment are crucial for their handling. As the HVAC industry moves towards sustainability, A2L refrigerants are expected to play a vital role in reducing the environmental impact of cooling solutions. Conclusion A2L refrigerants represent a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable and efficient cooling solutions. By offering a balance of low toxicity, low flammability, and reduced environmental impact, they are setting the stage for the next generation of refrigerants. As regulations tighten and the demand for greener alternatives grows, A2L refrigerants will undoubtedly become a staple in the HVAC&R industry.

GAP Group NE Limited is now able to accept and recycle insulation panels and WEEE derived plastics on our Gateshead site. All insulation panels from current building projects and demolition work must be disposed of correctly. Landfilling them is not allowed and damages the environment. "Sandwich" panels from demolition jobs must not be broken up on site to recover the metal element as the foam is broken up and hazardous ozone depleting gases are released to the environment. Some of these gases are dozens of times more damaging than CO2 and are a major contributor to global warming. Insulation panels contain more ozone depleting gases per tonne than the equivalent volume of fridges. We have onsite facilities to cut panels to size and therefore can accept all sizes and shapes of panels. We have capacity to accept both WEEE derived plastics (from small WEEE, display and fridges) and insulation panels. If you need us to organise transport or provide containers we can do that too! The image below shows a typical "sandwich" of metal with the foam inside.

The impacts of #climatechange hit the world's most vulnerable communities. From devastating flooding in Kenya to record breaking heatwaves in India and other parts of Asia where people are exposed to temperatures of over 45 degrees. I'm so grateful for the work our partners and their extraordinary leaders like Noah Horowitz from the Clean Cooling Collaborative. Interviewed by our great Indra Heerkens, he gives three important numbers: 1️⃣ There will be three billion more air conditioners in use around the world by 2050. 2️⃣ Over a billion people today don’t have access to the cooling that they need to stay safe and productive – a number that’s only growing. 3️⃣ We could help prevent one hundred gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 if we shift to more energy-efficient cooling solutions. The heat waves in Asia are a start reminder that we need everyone to join the movement to make clean cooling a human right. https://lnkd.in/eY3ND2zX
