There is a common denominator that unites Amr Gamal's films "Ten Days Before the Wedding" and "The Exhausted ones", which is the presence of the wounded city of Aden in his two movies. It is still too early for the war in Yemen to become part of the history, in the sense that we can talk about it in the past tense. Therefore, we find Amr Gamal’s tendency for the place to play a fundamental role as a living witness to the sequences of the war in Yemen. My last article on Khuyut in English

The recent Gouna Film Festival (GFF) and the MV Catherine arms shipment scandal have both ignited intense debates across Egypt and the Middle East, spotlighting Egypt’s current position amid regional turmoil. While GFF, held from October 24 to November 1, 2024, aimed to celebrate the arts and emphasize cinema’s humanitarian role, it has faced criticism for its timing amid escalating violence in Gaza and Lebanon. In parallel, the MV Catherine controversy involving allegations of arms transfers has raised difficult questions about Egypt’s foreign policy and potential ties with Israel. Together, these events reveal complex cultural and political dynamics at play, testing Egypt’s standing domestically and regionally. #FilmFestival #CinemaForbad #CulturalDiplomacy #MiddleEastPolitics #ArtAndPolitics #SocialImpact #DocumentaryFilmmaking #Gaza #FilmIndustry #PoliticalAwareness #FilmCommunity #CreativeLeadership #HumanRights #CinematicStorytelling #ArabSolidarity #TransparencyInGovernment #CulturalIdentity #GlobalCinema #EthicalFilmmaking #InternationalRelations

Rethinking African Futures in Film. In our latest DAAD Letter, we interviewed DAAD alumnus and renowned Cameroonian director Jean-Pierre Bekolo. Known for his bold approach to filmmaking, Bekolo has spent over three decades creating films that challenge conventional narratives and explore alternative African futures. In the interview, Bekolo discusses how Afrofuturism allows him to imagine a world where Africa is not bound by its colonial past. His work, including Africa’s first science fiction film "Those Who Bleed", asks the question “What if?” – opening the door to new possibilities for the continent’s future. He also critiques the role of neo-colonialism in African politics and highlights the need for cinema to be a catalyst for societal change. Bekolo’s approach to filmmaking is not just about creating stories; it’s about empowering African audiences to rethink their reality and liberate themselves from the past. He continues to advocate for a cinema that takes risks and actively engages with global political issues. #Orientalism is rooted in #racism and white supremacy culture. 🧞♀️ I was asked if I had a pet tiger like Jasmine as a child. I was flattered. Jasmine was beautiful, edgy, and unlike other Disney princesses in attitude. 🐯 Rawr. Little did I know that an "exotic" hyper-sexualized brand would follow me my whole life -- starting as young as seven years old. And that's a relatively milder form of racism that I've been somewhat lucky to experience as a fetishized woman of color swimming in a sea of #racist tropes targeting all those "othered" from the parameters of #whiteness. To take back the reigns in storytelling and control our narratives is empowering. The #Hollywood machine has served primarily as a propaganda mouthpiece to serve state-sponsored agendas - parroting ignorant tropes that platform #antisemitism, #islamophobia, #xenophobia, and always centering the narratives of #colonizers and settler colonialists. This is, of course, no accident. That's where the big money has been made - through theft, genocide, and the violent expansion of empire. 💰 This cannot be achieved without the people's manufactured consent, which the U.S. media machine proudly and shamelessly churned content out to placate. I am SO here for the gradual decline of legacy media. 👏🏽 I am SO here for the disruption of networked traditional media gatekeepers. 👏🏽 I am SO here for the continued #Internet and #technological revolution to shake up establishment industries as we know them. 👏🏽 I am SO here for democratized #storytelling. 👏🏽 #freepalestine #arabamerican #internetculture #genzforchange #humanrights #antiracism #useyourvoice #bethechange

"20 Days in Mariupol", an eyewitness documentary film, the testimony of faschizoid russian crimes against people of Ukraine and humanity overall, was awarded Oscar for best documentary ( feature) in 2024. This is a very important and a well-deserved award for such a horrible but yet necessary and significant document. I hope and strongly believe that every reasonable person will finally get rid of any sweet illusions about "normality" of russia and its population. #20DaysinMariupol #oscar2024 #EuropeanUnion #ukraine #russiaisaterroriststate #fascistasrusos #GuerraEnUcrania
Mstyslav Chernov’s documentary, “20 Days in Mariupol,” has won 2024 #Oscar in the Best #Documentary Feature Film category. When “20 Days in Mariupol” took home the Academy Award for outstanding documentary feature, director Mstyslav Chernov used his acceptance speech to make a powerful statement in support of Ukraine. “This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian #history. And I’m honored,” Chernov said. “But probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say I wish I had never made this film. I wish to be able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities.” He continued, “Russians are killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all the civilians who are now in their jails. But I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past.” On stage were those who worked with the director on the film. Film director Chernov also shared the Oscar with producers Michelle Mizner, Derl McCrudden and Raney Aronson. AP’s chief photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, along with video journalists Mstyslav Chernov and Vasilisa Stepanenko were the only representatives of the international media who worked in #Mariupol under Russian occupation for more than 2 weeks. #WeAreUkraine #StandWithUkraine #20DaysInMariupol
