On this #SundayFunday, we continue to remember the legacy of the late Carl Monismith. Here's Erol Tutumluer of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Illinois and the 2021 Monismith Lecture: "Unbound Aggregate Pavement Layers - Dynamic Loading Behavior and its Characterization." https://lnkd.in/dStR2ufD

This time, let’s talk about one of the most actual research topics, which is the fragility of existing prestressed concrete bridges under service loads, accounting for corrosion effects. In the paper published in #engineeringstructures by Alessandro Nettis, Andrea Nettis, me and Prof Giuseppina Uva, we proposed an automated framework for an efficient probabilistic-based structural assessment of existing bridges, with the aim of contributing to new generation risk priorization strategies. Glad to write about our lab project with titled as 'Geotechnical survey of NUST'. This project was carried out to develop a geotechnical map of shear strength of shallower soil layer inside NUST. The selection of site is important from the viewpoint of stability of structure and availability of construction materials. Data from 10 geotechnical sites inside NUST were collected and various tests were performed to determine the index and engineering properties of each soil sample. Kriging method was employed to build the grid and contours in Surfer 16. Finally, we concluded that the subsoil inside NUST mainly consists of sandy lean clay in loose to medium state. Furthermore, we noticed variation in shear strength value from site to site which shows the different level of compaction at these sites and variation in soil properties.
