Today, I attended a virtual event by KPMG, which gave me a fantastic opportunity to learn more about their values, culture, and the incredible support they provide to employees and apprentices. Here are some key takeaways from the session: - KPMG’s Legacy & Impact: With over 150 years of history and 16,000 employees across the UK, KPMG continues to support the UK in an increasingly connected world. - Core Values: Courage and integrity are central to KPMG’s ethos. They invest heavily in their employees’ development and foster a culture where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is valued. - Apprenticeships: I gained valuable insights into KPMG’s apprenticeship programs, which offer pathways into areas such as audit, tax, technology, business services and consulting. Each program is designed to develop transferable skills and provide a smooth transition from school to the corporate world. - Support System: The collaborative environment truly stood out, with teams working shoulder-to-shoulder and providing mentorship at every step. 🔗 Top Tips for Aspiring Applicants: - Focus on your strengths rather than just competencies. - Research KPMG thoroughly to align your application with their values. - Explore their wide range of apprenticeship opportunities, available across the UK. I'm delighted to announce that I have accepted my offer to join KPMG UK as an Audit Apprentice (Glasgow)! Like myself, many are familiar that the journey of seeking apprenticeships can be daunting, filled with highs and lows - all while balancing academic studies. The effort required to keep pushing despite the setbacks is often underestimated. It’s vital that we use rejection as a motivator for our success, never let it hold you back! Today, I stand before you with a simple message: age should never be a barrier to your dreams, ambitions, or aspirations. Too often, society imposes limits based on age, relegating individuals into predefined boxes of what they can or cannot achieve. Age is merely a number, a marker of the passage of time, but it should never define who you are or what you are capable of accomplishing. Whether you are in your teens, twenties, thirties, fifties, or beyond, your potential knows no bounds. Indeed, with age comes wisdom, experience, and a wealth of knowledge that can propel you forward on your journey. Embrace the wisdom gained from years of living, but never let it become an excuse for complacency or inaction. Instead, channel your experiences into fuel for your ambitions. Let them ignite a fire within you, driving you to reach new heights and conquer new challenges. Remember, every setback is an opportunity for growth, and every obstacle is a chance to prove your resilience. Taking this into account, as a 16 year old coming into a “Big 4” financial firm I am fully aware of the challenges that I will face however, every challenge is an opportunity, every setback is a lesson and every success, a milestone on the path to greatness. Hello Network, Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an event hosted by one of the Big Four – EY organised by the The Black Apprentice Network (BAN). It was an inspiring evening filled with valuable insights, networking, and interactive learning. Here’s a breakdown of the key highlights I took away from the event: 🌟 EY Service Lines/Functional Areas We were introduced to EY’s main service lines: • Assurance • Tax • Strategy • Transaction 🌟 The Apprentice Panel It was a privilege to hear from apprentices Rachel Daramola Rodney Kaggwa, Maria Oduyemi and Grace Matema Matema. They shared their experiences at EY, discussing why the firm stood out to them, some challenges during their application journeys (including rejections from other firms that led them to EY), and answered insightful questions from the audience. 🌟 Networking Session I had the chance to connect with aspiring apprentices who shared their career aspirations and motivations. 🌟 Interactive Activity We were guided through EY’s assessment process, where I applied my mathematical skills to solve real world problems.This also included examples of motivational videos and tips on how to stand out during the application stage. I’m incredibly grateful to The Black Apprentice Network (BAN) and EY for this fantastic opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. It was a fantastic opportunity to hear from KPMG apprentices like Hope Deathridge, Nicole Gavaza, Jon Evans, Nadia Dabbagh-Hobrow, Ben Chapman and Sarah Agho . The session provided an exclusive look into life at one of the world’s leading professional services firms. I’m so happy to have been part of the Bright Network Internship program ✨ Day 1⭐️ Day 1 kicked off with Philip Yarrow’s energetic introduction. James Uffindell , the CEO of Bright Network shared his inspiring journey, highlighting how his experiences led to creating a valuable student tool. Ajay Kabra ‘s story of adapting as an international student and succeeding at PwC resonated deeply, reflecting on my own challenges and growth. I honed my skills with Deloitte ‘s leadership tips, including the Eisenhower Matrix for time management. ICAEW 's workshop on transferable skills was invaluable for exploring non-traditional career paths. PwC UK's session on personal branding helped refine my professional image. Day 2⭐️ Day 2 delved into Finance, Professional Services, and Consulting. Kate Reynolds from PwC UK covered consulting basics, followed by insights into tech consulting at IBM. Chris Hare's session on the global and UK economic outlook was a highlight, offering a clear and detailed overview. Engaging with EY , Deloitte, HSBC,PwC UK , and KPMG UK provided great insights into breaking into Finance or Consulting. Grateful to Bright Network and their sponsors for this opportunity. Looking forward to the upcoming sessions! Recap of IEUK Day 3 & 4✨ ⭐️Day 3 The day began with Sara Jones from BT Group, who shared her journey from Senior Engineer to Non-Executive Director. She emphasized that failure is part of the process and that taking risks is crucial for success. Following this, Ryan Mairs led an inspiring session on building resilience, highlighting the importance of mental health and wellbeing. His firsthand experiences with mental health issues resonated deeply, especially his quote, "Fall down seven times, get up eight," a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience. Day 4⭐️ Today focused on completing our work sample, a real-life audit simulation with PwC We engaged in self and peer reflections, gaining insights into the role of an auditor at PwC UK. A highlight for me was connecting with diverse individuals from various backgrounds. I'm looking forward to maintaining these connections! Following on from Jonathan Holt's post last week and his letter in the Financial Times - https://lnkd.in/eZkKcGkp - this afternoon, I attended a KPMG insight webinar hosted by Dan M., Nadia Dabbagh-Hobrow, and Ben Chapman. The session covered apprenticeship options, KPMG's values and what the firm looks for in candidates. It was also great to hear from current apprentices Hope Deathridge, Sarah Agho, Nicole Gavaza, and Jon Evans who shared their own experiences and perspectives. A few things that stood out: - Start at 16: Begin a 2-year Business Services apprenticeship right after GCSEs. Earn a solid £23k–£24k while working toward A-level equivalent qualifications. - Start at 18: After A-levels, embark on a 5-year Audit apprenticeship. By the end, you’ll have a Level 7 (Master’s-level) qualification and be a fully fledged chartered accountant. - Earn While You Learn: Gain on-the-job experience, build a strong network and pick up professional qualifications—without the typical student debt.
