Momentum Structural Engineers’ Post

Time to introduce our runners up for the Momentum Sustainability Awards in the New Builds category. Perrymill Barn This ultra-low energy house focussed on minimising both operational and embodied carbon. Working in conjunction with Pentan Architects and PYC Construction to ensure careful detailing to meet Passivhaus standards, the superstructure avoids the use of typical high embodied carbon materials such as steel or concrete and instead heavily utilises glulam beams and frames to form large open spaces and window openings, and a feature truss above a swimming pool. This helped to minimise the embodied carbon whilst providing an attractive expressed structure throughout the building. Cement use was minimised, with Greenbloc Cemfree blockwork below the timber frame and 80% GGBS cement replacement to any remaining concrete. We also undertook SuDS design for the project, which features green roofs, bio-retention features and surface water attenuation. #MOMSAs #sustainabilityawards #glulam #engineering
