Thank you to Nonprofit Austin at ACC for inviting me to teach a Nonprofit Comms 101 course over the past few weeks. It was a pleasure getting to know staff, volunteers, and fellow consultants who support Central Tx nonprofits' efforts to tell their stories and motivate change. We covered a LOT in the 3-part virtual course–everything from starting with WHY, knowing your beneficiaries and your target audiences, the Seven Steps for Successful Content Strategy, and more. Of course I threw in some signature Connecting Our Stories elements–contemplative check-in exercises and a homework handout exploring the powerful connection between our personal stories and our organization's impact. Good stuff! Here is one of the course slides that prompted a content strategy discussion many could relate to. Anyone ever faced the challenge of needing to pull back on a good comms idea (product, project, event, experience) to ensure it is aligned with a thoughtful strategy? It's sometimes hard to do, but always worth it. And it doesn't mean the final determination will necessarily be: "No, let's not do it." Often it's a Yes+ strategy foundation that will save time, energy, head scratches, and hurt feelings. Any other comms folks out there feel me on this one?
