I spent my 3 weeks of unpaid maternity leave for my second child doing recordkeeping for taxes for my in-home family child care business with my newborn son sitting by my side. It makes me sad because I think, what a waste of time - I would have loved to be spending all my time with him. And a couple of my child care parents just had to interrupt that time to get things they had left in my program. I didn't want to close for longer because I was afraid I would lose my "customers". Isn't that a sad way to do parenting and child care? If we truly care about women or children, then we need to put our money where our mouths are. Fund women. Pay providers as the public educators they are. Other countries have figured it out and it's just normal. Whereas we spend all of our spare time hoop jumping in a system that still doesn't support us and the hoops never end.
Unfortunately, as an independent contractor, I got none. Yes, I had some money saved for my necessary time off, but I often wonder how much I lost by not having parental leave and job security afterwards.
If you have about 8 mins, please consider contributing to this survey from Parentaly. They're doing meaningful and crucial work to improve parental leave in the workplace--which benefits EVERYONE (whether you have children, are planning to have children, or not). Your participation will help employers learn how they can best support expecting/new parents.

Truthfully, this was a bit triggering, but I highly recommend anyone who has navigated parental leave take this survey.
Parental leave policies in the US tend to feel performative. This is especially true of companies with global footprints, operating in countries that enforce a minimum of 6 months fully-paid leave.
The burden of preparation is often placed entirely on the employee, and it appears that companies are increasingly forgoing the notion of backfills, further inconveniencing (and in many cases down-right disadvantaging) the parent (or parent-to-be) both before and after they take leave.
Few protections actually exist for employees who start families, particularly when you read the fine print of policies, including the federal or respective state-level FMLA.
If family planning or family expansion is something important to you, be sure to consider that when looking for employment and negotiating your package. Be weary of companies who use their short-term disability policies to masquerade as parental leave. Ask to see the policies and protocols in advance of accepting an offer. Don't be shy; negotiate something that works for you, and advocate for it to be the operational standard.
I'm done having kids, and while that decision wasn't fully informed or shaped by my mat leave experiences, they certainly didn't help. That said, I'm not done advocating for other people who hope to build families. I see it as a reaffirmation of a person's commitment to work; they're demonstrating an extreme (exhausting!) dedication to their careers and to their personal lives.
