I think this is the first year that I’ve seen such a heated discourse around the #superbowl between the advertisers and the viewers. The general consensus seems to be that a lot the #ads missed or felt outdated. The #advertisers are saying things ranging from “It’s harder than you think” to “Let’s see your portfolio.” No doubt, an incredible amount of work goes into not only financing and securing a spot, to choosing the right team to deliver a message that resonates on the nation’s stage. But should that absolve creatives from feedback? Growing up as an Eagles fan, my only joy in watching the Super Bowl was the #commercials — I could rest assured that even though my team wasn’t playing (shout out Randall Cunningham), I’d at least be entertained. It takes more than a #celebrity now to make a spot hit. And man, the world (and social media especially) moves. so. fast. By the time the game comes, we’ve seen previews of all of the ads. They’re last week’s news. In general, I think the discourse is good. I think that if you want to play in the big leagues you have to have big league ideas. And the fact that a client naturually wants to play it safe just means you have to push that much harder. Or walk. The coolest stories I saw were from Liquid Death ‘s bidding for ad space, and Dan-O's Seasoning co-opting that moment brilliantly. Even Frito-Lay thought out of the TV-box with a giant-sized Dorito as a send up of the #Sphere. And we have to mention the anti-commercial resulting in millions of dollars of sales for an artist/fashion designer. It feels like #zuckerberg is continuing that trend with is #applevisionpro comparison today. I’ve been in pitch rooms with some of the top brands in the world, and I know how tempting it is to just say yes once they agree upon any version of your idea. I still kick myself about one of these moments. But they are after results, not acceptance. Don’t win the battle just to lose the war. Thankfully, I know that know that next year’s spots are going to bring the heat. And that’s good for everyone. Especially Eagles fans.
