Can American AI Companies Compete with Fast Innovators? The Recent #China Inc #AI counter attack with DeepSeek AI and other AI companies (Alibaba Group, ByteDance, .....), since last year #Tesla lost its to competitive edge versus #BYD and the last 40 years with many other industries (Consumer Electronics, Healthcare, Transportation, Lighting, ....) it is clear that USA companies struggle to compete with integral cost competitive rivals and speed of innovation. #Invention is different from #innovation. The Recent example of Deepseek leaping into the top ranks of AI makers has sparked heated discussions in Silicon Valley around a process DeepSeek used known as distillation, in which a new system learns from an existing one by asking it hundreds of thousands of questions and analyzing the answers. More companies are copying the distillation process like #Huggingface. #OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X called DeepSeek’s latest release “an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price,” and added, “we are excited to continue to execute on our research roadmap.” This is a diplomatic answer not understanding yet what means China Inc. #Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote on his blog that DeepSeek’s flagship model “is not a unique breakthrough or something that fundamentally changes the economics” of advanced AI systems, but rather “an expected point on an ongoing cost reduction curve.” The latter statement shows that he lacks experience to compete with fast, agile and cost minded competitors like China Inc. For the LPs that have invested heavily, if those investments don’t provide companies with an unbeatable advantage but instead serve as springboards for cheaper rivals, they might become difficult to justify. In the wake of DeepSeek, executives and investors in Silicon Valley are re-examining their business models and questioning whether it still pays to be an industry leader and invest so heavily with unknown returns and heavy competition from China Inc. Additionally the recent big announcement from #Trump with a few billionaires about a 500 billion USD investment fund for AI especially cloud infrastructure is questionable. Time will show how the industry will develop but for sure competition will increase dramatically. Any comments?
