I'm taking in some fresh Turin air between sessions (sans sunshine unfortunately) at the ITCILO Skills Fair on Quality Apprenticeships. We've heard from panellists from across the globe including Lesotho, Togo, France, Canada, Madagascar, USA, Nigeria and Australia. Some initial reflections about what I've seen and heard, in the context of New Zealand's VET system: - we have a long history of apprenticeships (~150 years) compared to many countries, including a lot of developed nations - when considering International Labour Organization Recommendation #208 on Quality Apprenticeships, we have most if not all of the elements present in our system - our prevalence of SMEs is not at all uncommon globally - the VET systems considered to be successful have some core critical success factors present I'm looking forward to today's sessions, and promoting further discussions amongst our networks about we can do to make the system work even better. #QualityApprenticeships #ITCILO #Tepūkenga #ConCoVE

Apprenticeship backlog….. Just a thought that crossed my mind and seeing that the delay in the phase 2,4 & 6 training is continuing and set to continue I wonder where responsilities lay in a case where a talented student, who has started their apprenticeship in time and is displaying world class skills at an early stage but because they will not have their training completed due to no fault of their own will not get their opportunity to shine on the Workd stage. We are failing our apprentices miserably it is simply not good enough. I firmly believe that the craft trades are suffering for the benefit of office based apprenticeships. Yes, apprenticeship numbers are rising but I’m afraid it’s at a very serious cost. "Industry warns of looming Aussie tradie shortage: 'We can't keep up' The rate at which mechanic apprentices are completing trainee programs is already at a worryingly low 49 per cent in Australia. (c) Joe Attanasio Industry experts are warning that as cost-of-living pressures continue to cripple households, young Australian tradies are moving away from apprenticeships in record numbers, in favour of higher-paying labouring jobs which require little training. According to ARU, cost-of-living pressure has resulted in a whopping 60 per cent of all automotive apprenticeships in Australia being cancelled." 🌟 Degree Apprenticeships: Timing is Everything 🌟 As a career coach and a Muslim, I often reflect on how Allah Ta’ala encourages us to be proactive and intentional in our efforts. Just like in life, timing is critical when it comes to degree apprenticeship applications. For many programmes, the application window has already closed, but don’t lose hope! A lot more opportunities will open in January. Are you ready to seize them? Here’s a thought: • Do your research now: Find out when your target companies are opening their applications. • Prepare ahead: Polish your CV, refine your personal statement, and practice common interview questions. • Take action early: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Take advantage of five before five…” This includes making the most of our free time and youth—two blessings we often overlook. Just as we seek barakah by praying at the earliest time, applying early increases your chances of success. Companies often review applications on a rolling basis, meaning those who apply early have a higher chance of being considered. Let this be a reminder: Allah Ta’ala rewards those who plan, prepare, and strive. May He guide you to success in this dunya and akhirah. ➡️ If you’re aiming for degree apprenticeships, comment below with the field you’re interested in. I’d love to share insights or resources to help you succeed!
