Designed by RMJM the Falkirk Wheel is the only fully rotating boat lift in the world. The wheel was built as part of the £85.4m Millennium link project to reunite the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals in Scotland. The canals had previously been linked by a staircase of 11 locks which took nearly a day to pass through. The locks were dismantled in 1933. The wheel uses 2 gondolas which raise boats by 24m. As the Union Canal is 11m higher than the aqueduct at the top of the wheel, boats then go through 2 locks to reach the canal. At first glance, the Falkirk Wheel might seem like just a feat of engineering, but it's also a testament to the ingenuity of people in creating efficient systems. By replacing the traditional locks with the wheel, engineers not only streamlined the process of moving boats between the canals but also significantly reduced water consumption and energy usage. The efficient design of the Falkirk Wheel allows it to lift boats with minimal energy, using a system of counterbalancing weights and hydraulic mechanisms. This means that it can operate with a fraction of the energy required by traditional lock systems, making it more sustainable in the long term. The Falkirk Wheel has become a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at its engineering prowess. This influx of tourism brings economic benefits to the surrounding area, supporting jobs and businesses in Falkirk and beyond. Plan Co. recently obtained a joint land use and subdivision consent for four new sleek and contemporary units on a rear site in Remuera. Working alongside Shape Architects, and other key specialist, Plan Co. was able to successfully navigate issues raised during the application process. This included ensuring the protection of a 15m Liquidambar Street Tree which forms part of an avenue of trees along Mahoe Avenue.
