Had a great time participating in a stimulating panel discussion on maritime innovation at Smart Maritime Network Athens. It was a pleasure to exchange views with Malte Cherdron, Richard Holdsworth, Stylianos Papageorgiou and Nir Gartzman. I think the photo encapsulates all the emotions we went through during our discussions. Key takeaways: ⭐️ there is an urgent need to cultivate a pipeline of strong founders ⭐️ we need to foster diverse business solutions that are solving for problems of the future while being relevant to the present ⭐️Many successful pilots do not get converted or commercialised. How do we move pilots to commercialisation? ⭐️there is no winning vertical or segment of innovation. I couldn't have met these guys in one place even if I'd planned it for months. And now, coincidence brought us together at Vienna’s international airport. From right: Michal Rybovic, Partner at Sandberg Capital, is a bright and successful private equity investor I always love to talk to. Martin Cigler is CEO and founder of Seyfor, one of Sandberg’s portfolio companies. Martin is a bit like my inspiration or benchmark for what I’m trying to do, too. He has done a considerable number of M&A deals and fiercely consolidated the B2B software market in CZ and SK, with spillovers to other regions. Last but not least, Matej Klenovsky, who, along with Jakub Krajcovic, represents the new generation of private equity craftsmanship at Sandberg Capital. One thing's for sure. "In a press release by Simera Sense (EO-South Africa), the company has established a new office in Toulouse, France. This development is a testament to Simera Sense’s growth strategy, fuelled by USD 14.4 million (EUR 13.5 million) funding secured in an investment round earlier this year. The company currently has 19 optical payloads in space, with an additional 43 payloads prepared for launch to clients worldwide. Many of these customers are based in Europe, including notable names such as Loft Orbital, Prométhée Earth Intelligence, AAC Clyde Space, Open Cosmos, and OHB Systems AG, among others. The increasing demand for Simera Sense’s optical payloads has led to a rapid expansion in their development and production capabilities. Toulouse was chosen for its strategic location within the aerospace ecosystem. This new facility will serve as an R&D engineering and production hub, catering not only to the existing client base in France and across Europe but also contributing to the development of high- to very high-resolution optical payloads for Earth observation. Furthermore, France, renowned for its space programme and expertise in space manufacturing, offers a rich talent pool that Simera Sense aims to leverage for continued success. 🌟 Back to Business! 🌟 The summer break in Scandinavia is gone for good this year. I am back to business, and just arrived in Oslo to meet with my colleagues from NITO - Norges Ingeniør- og Teknologorganisasjon This catch-up is important to discuss the transition after Trond Markussen stepping down as President of NITO & Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE) in late November and ensure the continuity of our business. I am also looking forward to meet my new colleague, Gro Tvedt Anderssen, the new Head of Policy & Communications to prepare for the activities lined up for 2025. Over the summer, I reflected on this new chapter and told myself, “Stop overthinking. Taming change in ANE is business as usual.” 😉 I realized I’m not great at disconnecting, so I was glad to hear Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal on the right to disconnect. But I doubt it will help me disconnect from thinking, even though I’m good at digital detox. Speaking about digital tech, another business as usual in ANE is to discuss responsible development of AI in the Nordics. So, I will pass by Nordic Innovation to meet with Olivia Rekman to clear up avenues for Nordic engineers’ expertise on sound ethical solutions for AI.
