Embracing Sustainability at sTARTUp Day 2025 Organizing events has always been my cup of tea (or should I say, a fine aged puerh?). I'm thrilled to announce that I've been invited to join the sTARTUp Day 2025 team, focusing on Sustainability. This exciting niche allows me to channel my passion and expertise into a focused goal. Even my cat Rufus seems to approve—though he's more interested in playing with the (unfortunately) injured rats he catches than discussing sustainability. But hey, we all have our roles to play in this ecosystem! My core belief in a sustainable planet aligns perfectly with this role. It's a testament to the power of working on tasks that resonate with your values. Have you ever found yourself in a position that perfectly matches your calling? I've experienced sTARTUp Day from multiple perspectives: - In 2020, as a startup leader seeking investment for my traveltech company (just two months before COVID-19 changed everything) - In January 2024, as an inspired volunteer Each time, I've been struck by the strong values this community embodies, particularly its commitment to sustainability. The actions taken towards this goal never fail to impress me. I'm proud of our team and former leaders for building such an impactful event. Now, we're taking another leap forward! Here are some ways we're "hacking" sustainability into our next event: 1. Enhancing the sustainability of all side events (food, venue, materials) 2. Curating Demo area partners and their offerings to be more planet-wise 3. Exploring alternatives to single-use carpets in production (a challenge for all event organisers I guess) 4. Improving food waste management and order planning With this team, sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a mindset that informs every decision. We're conscious and present in these details, breathing life into our commitment to the planet. Thoughts post KL20 Summit I actually networked more on Airmeet in the last 2 days compared to in person when I was at the summit. I was the first to say "Hello" in the chatroom to test the feature 😂 and then I saw more people using it to connect and network. All these while I thought meeting face to face would be fun and meaningful now I am thinking otherwise 😄 So when I revisit the chatroom again, it's now empty and void of all those chats. Life for everyone is back to where it was before. Some are still struggling to find support, some are still hoping to get connected to the ecosystem and some hope to be part of something where they can use their talents/skills. A lot of questions came into my head when I recalled looking at the itinerary. How does some startups managed to set up booths and showcase their work in the last 2 days? Why does some networking events listed "by invitation"? Who does the invite and how? There is a speed dating corner for investors and startup, at first startups need to submit their interest to see if investors would like to see them. I heard not many made it, and eventually it became a walk in session. Whichever investors are free for a chat (if they are there), startups can walk up to them. Did I went for it? No. I figured that if only one wants to see me for 15mins, what about the rest of my time spent at the event? The event should be a walk in session from the beginning 😎 My 2cents. I hope to read up more startups success stories post #KL20Summit. I hope to see more programs stemmed from the event, enough with accelerator programs please, we need MORE action on the ground. Build fast, fail fast, scale fast. If no one gives a chance on Malaysian startups, we will see more foreign players in the country. I build Helolokal because I wanted to see a local homegrown startup take up a small chunk in the tourism industry that has been monopolised by traditional tourism businesses. I wanted to see Helolokal on parr with Airbnb , Traveloka or even Klook. We have been supporting and using all these platforms happily all these years, why can't we have our very own instead? The only difference that stood between us and all those foreign players are SUPPORT. They have the support from their ecosystem to propel them further. While we have skeptics in Tourism Malaysia and Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) that fears we will never make it because we are facing these giants. Believe me, as I wrote this there are similar new platforms out there in other parts of the world, growing and waiting to be the next unicorn. Wake up Malaysia, YB Rafizi Ramli PM Anwar Ibrahim YB Chang Lih Kang 😊 The world is watching after the 2 days event. If the government and its agencies don't make a move FIRST, make it simple for startups to grow, why would foreign investors come in and take their chance? IT STARTS HERE, our backyard first 😉😉
