🌟 This week marks a significant milestone in my professional journey: 5 years of growth, challenges, and achievements at Gozem - Africa's Super App. When I joined as the first data professional, I couldn't have imagined the incredible journey ahead. Starting from scratch, I've had the privilege of building and leading our Data & Analytics team from the ground up. Together, we have modernised our data stack from on-premises to cloud, leveraging Google Cloud components to power decision-making systems and make our products more innovative. Bringing seamless transportation, e-commerce, and financial services to millions through a groundbreaking super app has empowered the creation of a unified ecosystem that is revolutionizing daily life across french-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa. It is a privilege to be part of such an amazing adventure. If I could share key lessons with my younger self who embarked on this special journey on November 18, 2019, they would be: - Stay close to business units: Understanding their needs is crucial for delivering impactful solutions. Nobody cares about how elegant your code is or how sophisticated your architecture is if it brings no value to the table. 😂 - Look beyond day-to-day operations: Don't let today's urgent fires distract you from tomorrow's opportunities. I’ve spent most of my career working in research. There were summer stints at the local samosa factory (‘don’t come back’), Bradford & Bingley (too much beer but was fun) and Northern Electric (nice folk, madness, work parties made Milieu karaoke nights look like a Care Bears evening out). After starting at Ipsos (little vacay at RI in between), I joined YouGov (headcount 15). Fast forward 3 kids, 2 continents, 18 odd years of service and a decade as COO, my time was up. The company decided to head in a different direction & I pondered my next move. Then the call came from Gerald Ang - he mesmerized me as soon as he opened up Milieu Insight's Canvas 2.0 platform & showed me the goods. Gerald was someone I begrudgingly admired; begrudging because he kept winning work from my old company, admired because I know what he went through to do it – I’ve never had the balls to do a start-up, never mind the origin story (which we are saving for the Milieu paperback). Even if he ‘had me at hello’, my own pitch back was more Liam Neeson than Jerry Maguire. ‘I do have a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career’ I could see the potential immediately – I knew how underwhelming the options for clients were. It’s 2024, and yet some research products and so-called platforms are still 2010. It doesn’t matter how much you fill the hopper, scale teams, drive efficiencies but eventually the technical debt is going to bite. Bite hard. ⬇ But here was a founder who wasn’t running tech & product like his own little vanity playset. He’d made tough decisions, brought in the right people, backed his teams, sometimes when they disagreed with him, wore 6 different hats & didn’t put his own ego first. Tough times don’t just make tough people, pressure makes diamonds 💎 This SEA genie is about to be released – we are getting ready to go across the World 🌏 I have my dream team & we have our amazing product. - You’re going to get something that’s incredible value – dripping in blood, sweat, tears and innovation. How can early-stage startups effectively leverage data with limited resources? I got to answer this great question and lots more in a panel discussion with Sibo Wei and Ellen Lee last night, at an event organized by Operators & Friends at Creandum's office in Stockholm. My answer ultimately came down to these points: ⚒ Don't start by spending months or years on building an advanced data platform - think about your use cases first. 🌿 Start with something small that you can build and evaluate E2E before adding more use cases. 👫 Consider opportunities to build internal or customer-facing products from the beginning, instead of focusing purely on analytics first. 💸 Measure the value of all the work you do - ideally in monetary value since that enables comparing initiatives spanning the entire company. 🗣 Don't try to use data for everything - speaking to users will often be a better option at an early stage.
