🎄 Pre-Christmas shopping lessons from the Sth Melbourne Market 🎄 This afternoon I visited the fabulous South Melbourne Market to pre-order prawns for Christmas. But here’s where it got interesting: Each fish shop had a different approach to pre-orders: Shop 1️⃣ Minimum order of $200. Shop 2️⃣ Minimum order of $300. Shop 3️⃣ No pre-orders—just come in three days before Christmas and hope for the best. I totally understand having a minimum order, especially during busy times like Christmas. But all I wanted was 2kg of prawns, and none of the options fit what I needed. The result? None of these shops got my business today. It made me wonder: In times of economic pressure and “hard times,” is saying no to business the best approach? Could there have been a way to capture smaller sales without compromising operations or profit margins? As a sales consultant, this interaction highlighted something we often talk about: balancing your business rules with customer needs. •Are your rules too rigid to adapt to changing customer demands? •Are you leaving money on the table by not offering alternatives or flexibility? Sometimes a small sale today builds loyalty and bigger sales tomorrow. Food for thought as we all navigate challenging times. What do you think? Here's something you don't see nearly enough in retail at the moment ... cleaning. So massive kudos to Next in Martlesham today. It's all too easy when times are tough to cut hours in the shops and cleaning hours are often the first to go. Standards in some national retailers aren't good enough right now and that gives shoppers another reason to shop on line. What the actual…??? 🫣 A great example of how you don’t want your stores to look! 😖 Imagine having your category down one of these aisles 🤨 Perhaps this is a symptom of a busy store, maybe trying to stock too much range, or even complacency on the part of store staff. With retail availability at all-time lows, it is worth seeing where the available space is. In Kansas City, most of it sits in properties that were built before 1980. Newer buildings continue to have tight conditions, with the availability rate among properties built since 2021 at 2%, less than half the market average. As consumer preferences have shifted, especially for dining, many quick-service operators have built new locations to accommodate a high percentage of drive-thru and online ordering that has increased since 2020. With the recent city-wide closing of Foxtrot stores throughout #Chicago, this story about how convenience stores are evolving into destination locations highlights the need for corner-store meeting places, which serve that critical niche of "#neighborhood convenience". This concept is also what I believe was the critical nail in the coffin for the #Foxtrot business model, where stores seemed to miss the mark in stocking the essentials, like milk, eggs, and other staples that would have facilitated regular foot traffic to the store, where the alternative would have been a longer journey to the grocery store or paying delivery fees. Success in #RealEstate is often found when you are steadfast in the fundamentals and the fundamental need of a convenience store is to provide life's essentials within walking distance. #CRE #RetailRealEstate

Another #onlyinbentonville moment. Ocean Spray Cranberries is touting their new "Just Add Cran" product (don't know what that is) by allowing shoppers of Store 100 to don waterproof overalls and stomp on cranberries themselves. As I entered and left the store, I saw about 50-100 people in the exhibit. On-site activations like these are a staple of the Bentonville supplier community, but this was one of the most elaborate I've seen in a while! Now, to the real question, what will the iROAS be for this Store Front Activation? #commerceIQ #retailmedia #ecommerce

Which stat best illustrates the fact that outlets are robust, relevant and resilient? #Outlet centre press releases are awash with increased sales figures, record breaking MAT, improved conversion but we particularly like this #micdrop magic number. Read it slowly for dramatic effect... 1 million yes, that's right 1,000,000 (new) shoppers have got into outlets in the UK in the last two years. That's an impressive level of new customer acquition as revealed by Kantar in this Drapers article by Megan Tatum which goes on to give a contemporary and well-balanced take on the success of #outlets and the diligence required in operating in the sector - whether as landlord or brand. We all know that consumer behaviour is changing but to be actively attracting the fluid, inquisitive, price-conscious and experience hungry consumer is why we are performing so well.
