🔬Messaginglab and Degron Therapeutics Partnered on a $1.2B Collaboration Announcement - With Big Results 🧬 We're thrilled to have collaborated with Degron Therapeutics - an emerging leader in the discovery of small molecule, molecular glue degrader drugs - on their recent press release announcing their $1.2B collaboration with Takeda. Molecular glue degraders are small molecule drugs that act as adhesives by bringing a disease target protein to another protein called E3 ligase, which is a component of a protein degradation machinery. As a result, the disease target protein is “tagged” as trash and degraded in the cell.   This approach has the potential to target previously undruggable proteins, opening new avenues for treating challenging diseases in cancer, inflammation, neurodegenerative and other disorders. Stories making headlines today in the biopharma industry: The biotech industry is reclaiming lost momentum, with the resurgence of crossover rounds, which serve as final private fundraising before making an IPO. The latter part of 2023 saw the highest activity in these rounds since the boom years of 2020 and 2021, pointing towards an increased faith in the market among startup investors. In a predominantly bleak turn of events, Japanese pharmaceutical giant Sumitomo has announced job cuts for about 400 employees in North America, in light of falling far below sales expectations. Alongside this, the company has plans to revamp its top-tier leadership. Consequently, Myrtle Potter, who had been holding the reins as the President and CEO of Sumitomo Pharma America, will be stepping down from her position by the end of March. In collaborative news, Gilead Sciences has partnered with Merus to develop trispecific antibodies. The joint venture could potentially result in Merus benefitting from up to $1.5 billion in downstream payments and royalty fees. As part of the deal, Gilead will fund early-stage research on two trispecific antibody programs, with an option to add a third if required, in return for an upfront payment of $56 million coupled with a $25 million investment. AstraZeneca has announced plans to invest a significant sum of £650M in enhancing its manufacturing capabilities within the UK and enlarging its campus footprint in Cambridge. The decision is driven by the company’s intention to bolster its R&D prowess and augment its visibility in the country's vibrant life sciences landscape. Alumis, an immunology startup, has successfully raised a $259M Series C funding ahead of their late-stage trials of the TYK2 inhibitor for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. This funding is set to expedite the advancement of the drug, ESK-001, through the scheduled clinical trials in the latter half of this year. Among other updates from the healthcare market, Apogee Therapeutics is targeting to secure $350M through a stock sale that comes on the heels of the release of Phase I data for its atopic dermatitis treatment. Meanwhile, Adaptive Phage Therapeutics is set to merge with BiomX, which would result in creating an amalgamated phage therapy biotech, boasting two Phase II assets. Pfizer has publicized an ambitious vision for its cancer portfolio, as part of its business revitalization strategy, indicating a considerable focus on oncology in the company’s future. Nocion Therapeutics has successfully raised $62 million to forge ahead with a novel approach to chronic cough treatment - a method that significantly differs from current methods used by competitors like Merck and GSK.
