Continuing my series posts defining patent terms, today’s word is: “INVENTOR”: a person who conceived of, or contributed to the conception of, an Invention (defined in my previous post: https://lnkd.in/echeJFeg). Exemplary usage: Mr. Peltz conceptualized the improved pollinator drone, qualifying him as an inventor on the patent. (Note: Simply reducing an invention (conceived by someone else) to practice does not make one an inventor in the U.S. (See MPEP §2109). Questions and comments welcome! Announcement: A new series of posts defining patent terms starts today! Follow me for these brief, regular updates. Today’s word: “INVENTION” – a new product or process, such as a machine, manufactured item, or composition of matter. (Examples: new drug combinations or formulations or an improved solar panel or metal alloy). This includes new uses for known items, such as aspirin’s role in preventing heart attacks. Exemplary usage: Her invention was not positron emission tomography itself but rather methods for hybrid anatomical and functional imaging using PET + CT scanning.
