The NXT BLD conference hosted by AEC Magazine consistently stands out as a highlight event for me each year. It serves as a vibrant melting pot for sharing innovation within the AEC industry by those undertaking design, engineering, and construction services, featuring industry technology giants like Autodesk, Bentley, and ESRI, as well as dynamic startups making their mark. The event continues to spark essential discussions on open data and structured data management, highlighting the potential and challenges of APIs in accessing cloud data for AEC projects, which could result in a "Swiss cheese" effect of incomplete data access or context decision-making. Particularly thought-provoking were the conversations and presentations on offsite construction and the rise of micro-factories, which hold the promise of revolutionizing the design-to-construction timeline for certain sectors. The use of AI in architectural design and immersive environments was really inspiring, demonstrating the powerful synergy between technology and creativity. This time of the year is actually one of my favorites, but not just because of the Christmas spirits flying around. Both, December and January, are the months I use for looking back at what we’ve experienced professionally in the previous year, what was predicted for it, and what we got as the final result. Call it expectations-reality, but BIM version. So looking back at the conferences we’ve attended, clients, and friends I’ve spoken to, and projects we’ve made I think I’m ready to make some light prognosis for the upcoming year. Whether you’re our partner already or just dipping your toes into the BIM pool, it will be interesting for you to know what’s coming next. In 2024 focus around the world was on sustainability, efficiency, and digital transformation in construction, real estate, and facility management. Therefore, with tools like openBIM, VR, and AI making collaboration and data sharing even easier than ever, I’m sure we’ll see more Digital Twins and Smart Cities. As these technologies spread, they’ll transform not just infrastructure but also how we think about urban development. Talking of AI, it's already everywhere, but in 2025 the number of industries will only grow. BIM is evolving with AI-powered clash detection, automated workflows, and generative design tools, so those who will start mastering AI - will win.
